20 years ago, who would have guessed that one day the most common paint schemes passing through Cliff would be UP and BNSF!? 20 years ago, nobody had heard of BNSF and UP was hardly a mountain railroad. But today, a westbound BNSF manifest meets with an eastbound UP coal load at Cliff.

Railroads will frequently borrow power from one another for any number of reasons. Such was the case on this Sunday morning when a UP SD70M was adding 4,000 horses to BNSF's Denver-Provo trackage rights train.

A westbound BNSF manifest is pulling in to the siding at Cliff. It is meeting an eastbound coal load (which is already waiting for it west of the grade crossing). Unfortunately, it isn't going anywhere for awhile once it gets to the west switch at Cliff due to additional eastbound traffic.

A single AC4400CW helps push the QDVPVJ through the siding at Plain. Since the MNYRO was moving very slowly (due to a shortage of power), DS-82 let the BNSF train get ahead!

BNSF's Denver-Provo trackage rights train has an all-EMD consist on the point as it heads west on the siding at Plain. The train is overtaking an under-powered MNYRO which is holding on the main.

"Hey buddy, can you lend a hand?" UP's MNYRO is stopped on the main at Plain because they are having issues getting anywhere close to track speed. DS-82 aligned BNSF's QDVPVJ into the siding alongside the MNYRO. The train stopped and the engineer hopped in to the end DPU to ensure that it was configured and working properly. Turns out it was and the train, with only three units, was likely under-powered.

This is the second of two Warbonnets on BNSF's QPVDVJ coming in to Denver on this February morning. It has seen better days, but at least it is still a Warbonnet!

Worn paint, graffiti, burn marks, rust and dirt...the sign of a true rail warrior! It seems that Colorado has been blessed with Warbonnets lately, despite its age showing right through, this Sunday was no exception!

The power on this BNSF Provo-Denver manifest has seen better days all the way around! The train is approaching the Sheridan Blvd overpass. In about five years, this shot will include two main tracks and an RTD Light Rail overpass.

An eastbound manifest comes around on the new mainline alignment toward Sheridan. UP is preparing to realign the Arvada Siding to change it into Main 2.

A nearly-matched trio (save for the burn on the side of the lead unit) of elephant style ES44ACs lead BNSF's Denver-Provo trackage rights train on the Moffat just east of Sheridan. The track next to the train is currently the Arvada Siding but soon it will be turned into Main 2. The new Arvada Siding is being built just to the left of BNSF Golden Sub near the right side of the picture.

A pair of Warbonnets, both sporting a couple of orange components (unfortunately), leads a southbound baretable just south of Broomfield. The train is about to pass underneath US-36 near Church Ranch Lake.

The Denver area got hit by two snow storms over the course of four days. The first one left 15-24 inches of snow behind and the second added another 2-3 on top. This was the first (nearly) cloud-free morning in about five days.

Tried my best to get a rural looking shot despite the fact this area is anything but rural anymore! The Flat Iron Crossing mall is behind the train to the left and a relatively new condo complex is to the right. However, the Rockies look fantastic on a sunny February morning. Interestingly, you can actually see UP's Moffat Tunnel Sub on the mountains in the distance! Plainview is roughly above the double stacks (with Rainbow Cut above the first car) and tunnels 3 and 4 are above the lead unit.

It is 15°F outside but the sun is shining brightly on the stinky slinky as it pulls south on the main at Broomfield. You can just see the end DPU in the distance and you can also see Longs Peak on the right side of the picture, trying to break through some morning fog.
