To advertise for Disney's new take on a classic - A Christmas Carol - they are sending a special train across the country over the next five months! The train is leasing a pair of Amtrak P42s (AMTK 157 and AMTK 71) are being leased and have been decorated accordingly. Here is the side of AMTK 157.

In a lot of ways, this turned out to be one of my favorite shots of this particular day. The Zephyr certainly isn't an overpowering component in the shot, but that's okay. Just a nice, lazy day in the Colorado high country along the Colorado River!

The towering 14ers of the Rockies are many miles to the east now, but that doesn't mean the mountains are gone. In fact, the westbound Zephyr is still close to 7,000 feet above sea level!

The Zephyr makes its way through one of the numerous (too many to count) S-Curves along the Colorado River. The tracks actually follow the river for over 230 miles, from Granby, CO to Westwater, UT.

After winding through Gore Canyon, the Zephyr approaches a clear signal at the east end of the siding of Azure. This is looking down on the train from the location know as "Inspiration Point" along Grand County Road 1.

It is a beautiful June afternoon as a slightly tardy California Zephyr makes its way west a few miles west of Granby. The train is following the headwaters of the Colorado River. June may mean summer, but that doesn't mean you can't still find a lot of snow in the Rockies!

Up until this point, the eastbound Zephyr had been running right on time. Unfortunately, a rock slide to the east changed that. Rocks came down between Tunnel 26 and 27, stopping all traffic for about two hours. Amtrak spent nearly an hour of that stopped right here at Cliff.

Three days into May, but there still a LOT of snow left in the high country. The eastbound California Zephyr passes through Tolland running right on time.

It is straight up 7:00pm as the Zephyr undergoes a crew change at Union Station. The eastbound Zephyr is just about 45 minutes early on this particular night! The P42DC - AMTK 50 - on the left side of the frame is kept in Denver as a backup in case one of the two units on #5 or #6 needs to be swapped out.

It's not easy getting a shot of Amtrak using the Passenger Lead to back into Union Station. This is because #6 (the eastbound Zephyr) is the only one of the two Zephyr's to use it. And it is typically well past nightfall by the time it is using it. But arriving 45 minutes early was key in helping me get this shot! The Zephyr is backing down the lead into Union Station.

Well, it can be done! Amtrak can indeed run not only on time, but early! The eastbound California Zephyr is in fact running about 45 minutes early on this particularly evening as it comes through the S-Curves at the base of Coal Creek Canyon.

An Amtrak California F59PH, which has spent the last six months at the testing center near Pueblo, CO. After some emissions modifications (to meet California emissions standards), the unit is headed to Chicago for some comprehensive testing.

This is the engine that was beat out by General Electric's P42DC to replace the F40PH. Amtrak received several of these units for use (as the name implies) in California. It is a rare find to find one of these outside that west coast state.

A rare shot of the back end of an F59PH! This unit came up the Joint Line earlier in the day. It is currently being placed at the House while waiting to depart.

The California Zephyr has, of course, changed much over the course of fifty years! In the last ten years though, it is very common for the Zephyr to have eight Superliners: three sleepers, three coaches, a diner and a lounge car. One of the cars - either a sleeper or a coach - was missing on this particular day.
