While the engineers side of UP 9871 (ex-DRGW 5401) looked practically pristine, the conductors side looks like this. Taggers did a real number on this Tunnel Motor...unfortunately.

Even though it has received a full repaint, you can tell that this was originally a Rio Grande tunnel motor because it has a chopped fuel tank. The space between the lead truck and the fuel tank was unique to the Rio Grande T-2's.

A roster shot of UP 9871 (originally DRGW 5401) on its way to retirement. This unit spent a lot of time in Colorado before it was patched.

A overhead roster shot of UP 2882 heading south through Greeley. This was once DRGW 5342, but has obviously undergone some changes. In additional to being patched, note the class lights and Mars lights have been removed.

A look at a funeral train which is transporting 21 units (17 tunnel motors) from Ogden, UT to Denver, CO. Once reaching Denver, the units will be moved to Burnham and placed in storage until they can be auctioned off.

This was the third to last SD40T-2 that Rio Grande received. This was DRGW 5411, delivered in March 1980. The unit is headed for retirement at Burnham in Denver. Appropriate, considering the time it must have spent at Burnham over the years.

This was the second Rio Grande unit that came on the property in October 1974. While many tunnel motors received a full repaint over the years, this unit was only patched! It'll be retired off UP's roster as it is seen here, and it'll spend its time at Burnham in Denver.

In January 1977, this unit arrived on Rio Grande's property as DRGW 5382. 22 years later, the unit was renumbered to UP 4008. It then lived as UP 8578 before being moved to UP 2900. After 33 years of service, this unit is headed for retirement at Burnham.

This unit has a long history of numbers! It was delivered as DRGW 5351 in in October of 1974. It was then painted in Espee colors and fly letters after the Rio Grande / Espee merger. After the Espee / UP merger, it was renumbered to UP 4004 on March 29, 1999. It kept that number for less than a year. It moved to UP 8574 on March 17, 2000 to make room for the SD70Ms. UP then moved it one more time, to UP 2885 on December 20, 2002. Just over seven years later, it is off to retirement.

When it is not out on the road, you can always count on finding Union Pacific's Colorado Springs switch sitting just north of the depot on the east side of the siding in the Spring. Here, a patch Cotton Belt GP40-2 and a freshly repainted Rio Grande caboose (01513) sit waiting for their next assignment.

Talk about a blast from the past! This was one of the last Rio Grande GP30's to be retired off the roster. This unit almost saw action in the 21st century, being retired on July 23, 1998. It has been sitting here in Burnham ever since, waiting for its new (private) owner to find a permanent home for it. The unit survived for nearly 37 years, seeing its first action in April of 1962.

Every locomotives that comes out of either Erie, PA (GE) or London, ON (EMD) has a unique serial number stamped somewhere on the frame (called a frame number). This can be useful for railfans because, if a frame number can be found, the original unit to roll out of the factory can then be identified. Here is the frame number on UP 1350 (originally DRGW 3100). The number is 7360-7.

On the north side of the Burnham Shops, we find this friendly face hanging out waiting for some final servicing! This was DRGW 3100, the very last Rio Grande geep to get a UP patch. That happened just over four years prior to this picture, on January 31, 2006.
