Talk about a blast from the past! This was one of the last Rio Grande GP30's to be retired off the roster. This unit almost saw action in the 21st century, being retired on July 23, 1998. It has been sitting here in Burnham ever since, waiting for its new (private) owner to find a permanent home for it. The unit survived for nearly 37 years, seeing its first action in April of 1962.

Every locomotives that comes out of either Erie, PA (GE) or London, ON (EMD) has a unique serial number stamped somewhere on the frame (called a frame number). This can be useful for railfans because, if a frame number can be found, the original unit to roll out of the factory can then be identified. Here is the frame number on UP 1350 (originally DRGW 3100). The number is 7360-7.

On the north side of the Burnham Shops, we find this friendly face hanging out waiting for some final servicing! This was DRGW 3100, the very last Rio Grande geep to get a UP patch. That happened just over four years prior to this picture, on January 31, 2006.

One last shot of UP 1989 leading the westbound Snow Bus, sitting on the siding at East Portal. The train is scheduled to head west to Phippsburg, CO. This will mark the first time the Rio Grande Heritage unit has ever traveled on the Craig Branch. This will mean that the Rio Grande Heritage unit will have finally traveled on all of its namesake major routes, save Tennessee Pass (which no unit has run on in well over 10 years).

About a quarter of a mile away from the Moffat Tunnel, this Snow Bus has come to a stop on the siding at East Portal. DS-82 has informed the train that they will be meeting at least one (and possibly two) trains here before they will get their change to run through the tunnel. The temperature outside for this shot was a rather brisk 2°F (-17°C)...

After getting the switch at west Rollins clear of snow and ice, UP 1989 and crew met an eastbound coal load, seen here taking the siding at Rollins. UP 1989 was originally going to meet the train at Tolland, but a frozen switch at west Rollins changes the location of the meet.

I was very lucky to be able to get this shot. The Snow Bus was running well ahead of me (hindered by slow speeds on icy roads). However, the switch heater at west Rollins was not working and the switch was out of correspondence. UP 1989 had to stop so the conductor could walk up to the switch and swing/pick the snow out of the switch points, allowing me to grab a couple of nice shots, like this one.

A good look at UP's Snow Bus as it makes its way west on the Moffat. A freshly painted bay window caboose is used to shuttle crews via the rails to and from trains that need a crew change in bad weather. UP 1989 (the Rio Grande Heritage Unit) and an SD9043MAC sandwich the caboose, allowing the train to easily move in either direction.

On days when the forecast calls for heavy snow in the mountains, UP will often dispatch a "Snow Bus" train west out of Denver. If roads are impassible and a crew needs to be relieved on a train, the Snow Bus will use the rails to pick up the old crew and replace it with a fresh crew. Here, the Snow Bus at Leyden is led by UP 1989.

Quite a different assignment from the one it had a few weeks ago when it led the California Zephyr! Here, UP 1989 is sitting on a train used for training of local law enforcement officials. That second car on the train is used for transporting radioactive waste by rail. The "nuclear" car has a buffer car on either side of it, and a Department of Defense caboose (actually used as a part of the Department of Energy) sits on the end.

UP 1989 was setup on the point of this rather unusual looking train at UP's Roydale Yard on the Limon Sub. The day before, a Colorado Highway Patrol tent was setup and officials were being introduced to the nuclear car, used for transporting radioactive waste.

Just down the street from the old Rio Grande depot in Salt Lake City, you can still find the Rio Grande Hotel. A lot of railroad history in this part of town.

A look at the front of the Rio Grande depot in Salt Lake City. The last train to use the station was the California Zephyr on July 31, 1999. After that, the tracks behind the depot were removed and replaced with streets as a part of the "Gateway" project for the 2002 Winter Olympics.

A look at the face of the only Rio Grande SD40-2 (to date) that will be preserved. The original number boards on 5371 went missing when the unit was sent to Cheyenne after it was retired in 2008. Union Pacific was good enough to find it some really nice replacements!

You may or may not be aware that every unit that is produced by either EMD or GE has a unique frame number. If you can find the frame number, you can (theoretically) find which unit it originally belonged to. 756046-16 is the frame number for DRGW 5371.
