Just ahead and around the bend, the train will enter in to Tunnel 8. At this point, passengers are enjoying a great view of the Colorado plains. The train is just about to enter Tunnel 3, with the tail end just about to clear the huge fill that was actually washed out in epic flooding in 2013. Wadsworth Blvd is the only six lane street in the city. Prior to 1995, Wadsworth under the tracks here was only four lanes. The bridge of the time could not accommodate six lanes, so a second, shoefly, bridge was built on the south side. The tracks were diverted over the shoefly bridge so a new bridge could be built. Once the tracks were place over the new bridge, there was no reason to tear down the shoefly bridge, so nearly 30 years later, it still stands with no tracks on it! The eastbound Rocky Mountaineer, with a pair of UP SD70Ms subbing in for the Mountaineer geeps, glides east down the grade east of Leyden amidst the fall colors. 14,259-foot Longs Peak stands tall in the distance. It is departing the siding on a clear (green) signal, and the two units leading the train are about to disappear in to Tunnel 2. With only two units on the train, they are both throttled up, kicking up some exhaust, as they work to pull the train toward the west end of Plain.
