The Ski Train has just emerged from the Moffat Tunnel. This shot was taken for a mile or two up Rollins path along the old railroad grade (turned dirt road).

Although the ski season has just ended, the ski train has not yet been taken back to Burnham. The train sits on track two in front of Union Station on this Sunday afternoon.

In the 1998-1999 season, the Ski Train stopped using leased power from Union Pacific (and the power car), and started using leased F40PH's from Amtrak. Two F40's were used during this first season, which turned out to be a disaster when one of the units went down. On one trip, the train couldn't make it up the hill! Here, the two leased F40's can be seen on the point of the train as the train backs into the wye at Tabernash.

Remember when the Ski Train cars had the name of the car on its side? Today, the side of every car simply says "The Ski Train". Unfortunately, a grinder was used to remove the names before "The Ski Train" was applied, so the old name plaques are lost forever. However, here is the North Park (Car 5) sitting on the wye at Tabernash in January 1999.

Moffat Tunnel (UP) Rio Grande, Ski Train
A sunny Saturday in June 1997 found me at the west switch of Leyden (UP Moffat Tunnel Sub). At this point, the Ski Train was still running with the three Rio Grande GP60s (3154, 3155 and UP 5702).

On this afternoon, the train had been specially chartered (I do not recall by whom or for what purpose). The train just met an eastbound coal load and is charging west in the afternoon sun. A hawk (or falcon? I'm not a bird expert!) circles around above the train, appreciating its beauty. Or, you might suggest it is simply looking for a meal...

In 1998, the Ski Train had not yet acquired their F40PH's from Amtrak. Over this summer, they borrowed the Rio Grande GP60's (even though 3156 had been repainted to UP 5702 less than a month ago). Here, the Ski Train sits at Union Station preparing for a trip west tomorrow.

In the late 1990's, the Ski Train (owned by Phil Anschutz) wanted their own power so they no longer had to lease power from Union Pacific. In the 1997-1998 winter season, they leased two F40PHs from Amtrak to test them out. There were some power issues which made them realize they would need at least three units. Here, two Amtrak F40PHs sit on the Ski Train in the siding at Fraser. These would not end up being the units the Ski Train would eventually acquire.
