A pair of CP units leads a unit tank train across the Texas version of the Colorado River. This is not the same Colorado River that the former Rio Grande runs alongside of through Colorado and Utah. This river runs its entire 862 miles within the state of Texas.

With the annual harvest largely completed at this point in September, a north unit tank train passes by fields of dirt with just some leftover stalks sticking up from the ground. Since the official approval of CPKC, it has not taken much time for KCS and CP units to become "mixed" across the former two systems.

A few miles north of Kendleton finds a northbound mixed intermodal/auto rack train on the move with a fresh crew. As part of this trip, I was really hoping to get shots of KCS Belle's on as many trains as possible. So it was quite ironic how many trains I caught with solid CP power!

A pair of Canadian Pacific GEs shove part of an intermodal train back in to the ramp at the Kendleton Yard. Once complete, the train will pull to the north end of the yard limits and wait for a recrew. A southbound covered hopper train waits for a recrew in the distance as a northbound tank train also pulls in to the yard.

Once Canadian Pacific retired all of its SD90MACs, the units went on to find life as rebuilds. Canadian Pacific had 60 of the units rebuilt by Progress Rail with a new designation as an SD70ACu. One such example is CP 7026, second unit on a northbound CPKC unit tank train.

A GP38-2 and a rebuilt GP40-3 (of Frisco origins) switch a string of autoracks at CPKC's Kendleton Yard in Kendleton, TX, which is located a little over 40 miles southwest of downtown Houston. This yard serves as a crew change point for CPKC trains on the Rosenberg Sub. Trains departing north do not stop in Houston, but continue straight through.

A northbound CPKC manifest sits in the relatively new siding of Wharton on the north side of Wharton, TX. This siding was built at the start of 2023. A few miles further is the CPKC yard of Kendleton, which serves as a crew change point. If the yard tracks are full (or cannot be blocked), northbounds will tie down here at Wharton. Such is the case today as this northbound waits for a new crew.

Despite the fact that final approval for the merger between Canadian Pacific and Kansas City Southern just came through a few months ago, the sign at the entrance to the intermodal facility and yard in Kendleton, TX has already been changed to reflect the new CPKC name, logo, and colors!

A lake that normally would not exist has popped up along the tracks as a field has flooded in the recent high volumes of rain. Cows in the distance seem to be enjoying the plentiful grass mixed with water as a southbound UP manifest, with a KCS lead, roll by south.

UP's MNPDV is moving south on the Greeley Sub at Gilcrest along US-85. Near-record rainfall in May and June has resulted in some flooded fields along the tracks, creating an interesting dynamic.

Throughout much of the year, the South Platte River seems to be down at almost a trickle. However, after a winter with a lot of snow fall and a ton of rain this spring, the South Platte have flowed a bit over its banks! A southbound UP manifest has a Kansas City Southern "Retro-Belle" SD70ACe on the point as the train crosses the river. Although this is a manifest in UP's system, there are several dozen double stacks at the front of the train.
