Even though I got a shot of it this morning, UP 1996 does not come through town very often, so I figured it was worth getting one more shot of it; I haven't seen it since 2020 prior to this sighting! It will depart this evening as the fourth unit on the MNYCY. When it comes to heritage units, none of them actually come to Denver particularly often anymore...

Swinging back by North Yard for the second time today, I found UP 1344 sitting, likely waiting for some light repairs. UP has laid off the vast majority of the folks capable of doing major repairs on engines in Denver. Anything too major will result in the unit being moved to North Platte, NE and Bailey Yard.
Something else worth mentioning is that this unit is very used to being in North Yard! It was originally delivered to Rio Grande as DRGW 3121 in September 1974! You can still clearly see where the MARS light once existed on the nose of the unit.

UP 4015 is the SD70M that is frequently assigned the duty of traveling with UP 4014, the Big Boy. However, this is not that same SD70M. When Union Pacific chose an SD70M to repaint as UP 1616 (the Abraham Lincoln unit), they chose to repaint UP 4015. About a year ago, UP decided to renumber UP 4392 as a "new" UP 4015. It received a fresh paint of coat in UP's newest scheme to go along with its new number.
On this Sunday morning, it was sitting amongst a string of half dozen SD70Ms, all waiting to head to Cheyenne. The other SD70Ms are likely headed for long term storage. UP 4015 is probably just headed back to the roundhouse in Cheyenne to serve with UP 4014 again in the future. I always appreciate how good units look in fresh paint!

Several units sit near BNSF's engine house on this sunny Sunday morning. The string of four units close to the camera is the power for the Beer Run that will head out to Golden later in the day. The GP40-2 and SD40-2 will serve as the power on the Golden Switch this week. That is the local that runs east out of Golden to switch industries along the line.

Was a bit surprised to find this FRA "Office of Safety" inspection car sitting on the old Denargo wye near BNSF's 31st Street Yard this morning. The power, a UP unit, was uncoupled and parked a few hundred feet away. I am guessing that the inspection train will depart Monday morning. The Denargo wye connects BNSF's 31st Street Yard and UP's 36th Street Yard. About 15 years ago, it was upgraded to welded rail and the one grade crossing on the line was upgraded. Ironically, with UP now using 36th Street only for local preparation and storage, and not for classification, the wye is never used. This is probably the first piece of equipment that has been on the wye in months, if not year.

At the south end of Rennicks yard, BNSF's Denver-Laurel manifest is pulling north on the "New North Main" through Fox Junction. The train is quite long today, coming in at over 8,000 feet in the length. While the head end is over here at Fox, the tail is still in the yard over at 31st Street. The train is starting to pull up toward Utah Jct to clear up for the Zephyr, which is ready to head west (but currently blocked).

A UP yard crewman just started up the prime mover in SD40-2 #1957. It is taking several minutes for the unit to fully warm up and, as a result, a lot of white exhaust is currently being produced. Also of note in this shot in UP 1019, a GP60. For whatever reason, UP seems to utilize GP60s in California and Texas quite a bit. They don't show up in Colorado all that often.

Like most Class 1 railroads today, Union Pacific has a lot of older units in long term storage. Many of them, including dozens of SD70Ms, are currently stored at 36th Street Yard in Denver. The units are waiting for one of three things. To just be reactivated and put back in service, to be rebuilt and put back in service, or be sold. Until one of those three things happens, here they will sit quietly and wait.
