The siding of Yarmony has changed a lot in the last two decades. It used to be one of the shortest sidings between Denver and Bond. A derailment in the early 2000s took out the west switch of the siding. And UP left the west switch out of service for years afterward, until finally extending the siding to the west and moving the east switch to the west as well. I was actually quite lucky to get this shot. The Zephyr had a good lead on me at Kremmling as I headed for Trough Road to get here to Inspiration Point. Fortunately (for me), a slide fence had been activated in Gore Canyon. That slowed the Zephyr down enough for me to get ahead. The eastbound Rocky Mountaineer passes through the colorful scene just east of Yarmony as some low-hanging clouds envelop a part of the mountain in the background. The Rocky Mountaineer leased a pair of SD70Ms from Union Pacific for power on the train in 2021. As you can clearly see, a wrap (of slightly mismatched yellow) was applied to both units to allow them to represent the Rocky Mountaineer. It sounds as though two Rocky Mountaineer units (based in Canada) are having PTC installed and will be on the train in 2022! The Rocky Mountaineer's Rockies to the Red Rocks is a deluxe train that makes two weekly round trips between Denver, CO and Moab, UT. Here, the train is climbing up the grade from Coal Creek toward Tunnel 1. Rumor has it that two of the Mountaineer GP40-2L units will receive PTC prior to the start of the train running in April 2022. UP 5105, another SD70M wearing a wrap, is down for mechanical issues at the moment. So a non-wrapped UP SD70M is filling in at the moment. Once in the clear, DS-78 will align the west switch at Leyden to the main and the Rocky Mountaineer, whose headlight is visible in the distance, will get a clear (green) signal and head west. There was once hope that Missouri Pacific, Rio Grande, and Western Pacific would merge to create a single railroad that would have stretched from the gulf coast and Kansas City to the Pacific. Alas, that never happened...although all three would ultimately become part of Union Pacific! Here, UP 1982, the MP Heritage Unit, crosses over Indiana Street and the bridge that still sports "Rio Grande" in fly letters.
