The train is looking at a clear signal (green over red) at the west end and will continue down to Leyden where it will meet the westbound Rocky Mountaineer. This coal train is a bit odd as it is only about half the length of a typical coal load. In addition, the third unit on the head end is an SD70M. DC units are pretty rare on coal loads these days. The Rocky Mountaineer worked out an arrangement with Union Pacific to allow the operation of this train on a portion of the former Rio Grande. It will operate west on Sundays and Wednesdays from Denver to Glenwood Springs, CO. It will stay there overnight and run on Mondays and Thursdays west to near Moab, UT on the Cane Creek Sub. Passengers will disembark there and new passengers for the trip east will be picked up. It will then return to Glenwood Springs, CO. On Tuesdays and Fridays, the train will run east from Glenwood Springs, CO to Denver. The two UP SD70Ms being leased for the operation - UP 5107 and UP 5105 - have been give a wrap to cover up the flag and "Union Pacific" on the long hood, replaced with "Rocky Mountaineer". The UP manifest picked up a string of cars at Granby, which included a bunch of Herzog cars. The dispatcher probably should have held the manifest at Gore. After clearing the east switch at Azure, the switch would not align for the siding. The crew had to take the switch in hand throw and the flagged out of Azure. This delay was long enough that I had to head east without the train in order to get home for 4th of July celebrations, making this the last picture of the day. Most UP trains would change crews at Bond, but that was not the case with the Mountaineer. Crews from the Canadian-based tourist railroad have made the trip to Colorado and have qualified for running on the former Rio Grande. A single crew will operate between Denver and Glenwood Springs (and vice versa). Here, the train is on the siding as it will be meeting the westbound Zephyr. These cars will be used on the Rockies to the Red Rocks passenger train starting up in August 2021. Two of these cars are similar to the sightseer lounge car on Amtrak, offering up larger windows and a great view. Apparently, there is an issue with the main reservoir on one of the passenger cars and it needs to be inspected before the train can continue its journey west. UP's thrice-weekly MGJNY is tied down on the main in the background, necessitating the passenger train running through the siding. Several UP dignitaries are riding on this "dry run" of the special. It is rumored that CEO Lance Fritz himself may even be on board! This special will be starting service on August 11 and running through November 18 in 2021 for anyone that wants to book a trip from Denver, CO to Moab, UT (or back).
