This particular empty sits in the siding at Broomfield to wait for a meet in a fresh coating of spring snow. The train is sufficiently long that it has had to cut Nickel Street in Broomfield. The last four units here are idling, apparently in a power move. UP does this quite often, particularly on the Moffat, but I haven't seen it on BNSF very often. Case-in-point is this southbound coal load just getting ready to leave the yard in Denver and head for the Joint Line. An Iowa, Chicago and Eastern (or "ICE") SD40-2 led a work train north up the Front Range Sub. Here, the train is waiting for a southbound that has yet to leave Longs Peak, 35 miles to the north. Some crews claimed that the new units were louder (with their doors and windows closed) than SD40-2s (with their doors and windows open)! As a result, BNSF is ordering their newer units with Isolated cabs included. Note the "seam" that runs vertically on the sides of the cab just behind the nose. The cab is physically isolated from the rest of the unit, cushioning it and making for a quieter ride. This was the first SD70ACe that I had seen with the Isolated cab. This northbound PRB coal empty (reroute) passes some shards of asphalt discarded as part of the construction going on in the area. With the new development in the area, the grade crossing that use to exist to my right has been ripped out and Brainard now comes to a dead end here at the tracks. A snow/sleet/rain mix gave way to sunny skies over a short period of time. Minute ago, this northbound PRB coal train reroute was rolling through blowing snow. In the distance on the left, note the caboose and the half dozen cars lined up at Burns Junction, read to go to their industries in Lafayette. The green and cream SD70MAC's have been losing their "BN" or old "BNSF" heralds from their nose at a record pace. Case-in-point is SD70MAC #9584.
