Northbound coal loads head toward the Valmont power plant in Boulder and are pretty common. Coal empties however only come to the Front Range Sub when they are headed for the Powder River Basin and have been re-routed. The train is meeting a rare re-routed Powder River coal empty headed north due to track work on the Angora Subdivision northeast of Denver. Even though the Longmont Turn is clearly climbing a hill here, overall the tracks are going down an ruling 1.54% grade the rest of the way into Longmont. The train is just about to pass under US-36. This was the exact site of a head-on collision that occurred in August 1985 between two BN trains.
