To get from Denver to Kansas City, BNSF run south from Denver to Pueblo, then southeast from Pueblo to La Junta, CO on the Pueblo Subdivision. From there, trains use the La Junta Subdivision to head east into Kansas. Here, the HDENKCK highballs Avondale, along US-50.

From the 4th Street overpass in Pueblo, you can get a good view of either the UP (ex-DRGW) yard or the BNSF (ex-ATSF) yard. This shot shows the former Santa Fe Yard with a coal load slowly passing by on the main track. UP's yard is to the left on the other side of the road.

Some classic (and fantastic sounding) power picks up a string of TOFC cars that had been tied down at Kelker. In an hour or two, after running around the train, the train will run as a baretable south to Bragdon, where the TOFC cars will be tied down (on the siding).

Running on clear signals, BNSF's "Den-Kick" (HDENKCK-20, Denver to Kansas City) passes through the Springs with an interesting mix of new and old power. The train is relatively short on this particular day, with boxcars dominating the train.

Reflecting on the moment! This southbound BNSF coal load was stopped on Main One on the Joint Line, waiting for a southbound to clear further down the track. The opportunity was perfect for a nice reflection shot off the top of the east rail.

Just north of Perry Park Avenue in Larkspur, a southbound BNSF coal load is stopped while waiting for a southbound further ahead to start moving. Often times, due to the single track through Colorado Springs, trains on either side of the single track can get backed up.

Empty ties meet loaded ties! The railroad can't be too happy about either though as neither train makes the railroad any money! The empty train is on the main at Broomfield while the loaded train is on the siding.

The sun tries hard to break through the cloud cover along the front range. Meanwhile, an empty southbound tie train meets a northbound manifest (which just happens to have some loaded ties) at Broomfield.

The forecasters were correct regarding the cold front they said would be moving in! Clouds obscure the mountains as an empty tie train slowly approaches (at 10 MPH) the north siding switch of Broomfield.

Light power came north out of Denver to Boulder to pick up a train that had been tied down on the siding. While the conductor is knocking off the hand brakes, the engineers prepares for the trip north. The lead unit (an ES44DC) sits almost on top of the north siding switch of Boulder.

A look at the back end of the track geometry train BNSF sent north on the Front Range Sub. The last car - the Rio Grande River - is used for observing out the back of the train. In fact, the back of the car as actually be equipped with stadium seating so everyone has a better view of the tracks!

On the northern edge of Boulder, this short two-car track geometry train is making good time up the Front Range Sub. The train is approaching 63rd Avenue, currently passing an office building that is not currently leased out to anyone.

On a beautiful October morning, a BNSF track geometry train makes its way north on the Front Range Sub along the Diagonal (between Boulder and Longmont). Along this stretch of track, the train is rapidly approaching at 47 miles per hour.

This "train" is slowing on the approach the Boulder as it passes the Valmont Reservoir. This is a track geometry train, used to check for defects in the track. The first car - Track Geometry Car #1 - actually performs the testing.
