It is DRGW AX-41, and Rio Grande kept it stationed at Minturn back in the day. It would help keep snow clear of the tracks over Tennessee Pass. After Tennessee Pass closed, it spent a lot of time in the North Yard storage yard. It was used in 2003 when the Moffat got 80+ inches of snow. It was used again in Kansas on the KP at the end of 2006 and start of 2007. It then went back to the storage yard and sat. Finally, 13 years later, it looks like it might get some use again! It is supposed to be used on the west slope to actually clear some snow! By some accounts, it is the first time the spreader has left North Yard since 2007. However, one of the wings on the spreader hit the high/wide detector at MP 8.5. You might even mistake this train (at first glance) as a unit oil train. However, the lack of a buffer car between the power and the first tank car indicates this is not a unit oil train. The P42DC fleet is now more than two decades old and their age is starting to show. Consequently, Amtrak has ordered 75 ALC-42s from Siemens. These units, IDTX 4628 and IDTX 4632 are SC-44s being tested by Amtrak on today's westbound Zephyr. They are similar to the ALC-42s, but the ALC-42s will have slightly larger fuel tanks and have some other minor tweaks to improve performance on long distance trains. A pair of Siemens SC-44s and a P42DC lead the Zephyr west at Leyden. Get used to these SC-44s because Amtrak has ordered 75 similar units (called ALC-42s) to start to replace their aging P42DC fleet. The P42DCs are over 20 years old now and many are falling in to a state of disrepair. A GP60M (now a GP60M-3 after a rebuild) was the third unit on this Provo-Denver. While I do not know for sure, I suspect this unit may have been used in switching either in Grand Junction or Provo. While the direction the DPU is facing is irrelevant in terms of train operations, it is always a little strange to see a single unit when it is not facing backward such as this.
