There has been a slight increase in oil trains on the Moffat in 2020. These oil trains weight as much as coal trains. This particular train weighs in at approximately 12,400 tons. This is why there are two mid-train swing helpers. These helpers, and the buffer cars (covered hoppers) on either side of them will be cut out at North Yard. The neighborhood of Leyden Rock, to the left, did not exist in 2010! The City of Arvada annexed the (previously empty) fields from Jefferson County and, since then, hundreds of new houses have been built. This morning, the Zephyr has three sleepers, a dining car, a lounge car, and three coaches. A good consist for the winter, which often has lower ridership. The train departed Oakland, CA three days earlier and made its way across Nevada, Utah, and in to Colorado.
