A single SD70ACe bring up the tail end of an eastbound oil train, passing by the intermediate signal at MP 14.6. Hard to believe its been well over a decade since the old D&RGW (really, D&SL) signals were replaced here!

A pair of GEs serve as mid-train swing helpers on this eastbound loaded oil train. The train is passing along CO-72 and a frozen Welton Reservoir just west of Leyden.

94 tank cars loaded with oil roll east toward the west switch of Leyden. There has been a slight increase in oil trains on the Moffat in 2020. These oil trains weight as much as coal trains. This particular train weighs in at approximately 12,400 tons. This is why there are two mid-train swing helpers. These helpers, and the buffer cars (covered hoppers) on either side of them will be cut out at North Yard.

This is a shot that would have look extremely different just ten years ago. The neighborhood of Leyden Rock, to the left, did not exist in 2010! The City of Arvada annexed the (previously empty) fields from Jefferson County and, since then, hundreds of new houses have been built.

Three units, elephant style, lead a loaded eastbound oil train west of Leyden at the intermediate at MP 14.6. A C44AC-CTE, an AC4400CW, and an SD70ACe are on the point. After issues on Winter Park Hill with the last two oil trains, this one has two mid-train DPUs and a single DPU bringing up the rear.

It is a beautiful morning scene at West Plain as the California Zephyr as clear signals toward the tunnel district. The head end is approaching Tunnel 2. The trees have a light dusting of snow on them after six inches fell yesterday during a storm.

You can tell that the siding at Plain has not been used in the last 12 hours or so as the rail head on the siding is completely covered by snow. Meanwhile, on the main, an on time Zephyr heads west through Rainbow Cut.

It is a beautiful, sunny morning at Plain, the westbound Zephyr heads west. This morning, the Zephyr has three sleepers, a dining car, a lounge car, and three coaches. A good consist for the winter, which often has lower ridership.

A snow storm yesterday dumped about six inches of snow here at Plain, doing an effective job of covering the tracks. Cannot even really tell there are rails in this shot, other than the on time westbound Zephyr cutting through the scene.

Kicking up a little bit of snow, the westbound Zephyr is right on time as it glides west down the main at Plain. A snow storm the previous day dropped about six inches of snow here.

The MGJNY is being led by a C44AC-CTE and two SD70ACes on its journey east at Leyden. The third unit is UP 1995, which has now made a couple round trips between Denver and Grand Junction over the Moffat. The Zephyr is running a bit late this morning, so the train has a straight shot in to North Yard.

UP 1995, the Chicago North Western heritage unit reflects some morning sunlight as it rolls east on the main at Leyden. The unit was third on the head end of the MGJNY just after sunrise this morning.

Two days ago, UP 1995 came east on the MGJNY. Yesterday, it actually ran west on the MNYGJ, and this morning, it came east again on the MGJNY! A defective cab heater is still preventing the unit from leading the train.

A pair of units lead a work train out of Leyden, approaching the little bridge over Church Ditch. The train departed Oakland, CA three days earlier and made its way across Nevada, Utah, and in to Colorado. The train will head south on the Joint Line to get to Pueblo, adding a relatively rare UP train to the Joint.
