Extended cab GP50 3159 was one of five custom built GP50s built almost exactly 21 years ago in November of 1985. These test units were designed to comfortably fit five crew members, hence the larger cab.

BNSF 3159 (ex-BN 3149) sits on the siding at Broomfield waiting for a northbound HDENLAU to come out of Denver. BNSF 3159 was one of only five GP50s to receive a specially built cab designed to comfortably fit five crew members.

For the past decade or so, two units has been the standard on the Beer Run between Denver and Golden. However, on this particular Saturday afternoon, the train was being led by four units (the fourth of which was a former ATSF B30-7). There was no crew on board and, in fact, Tennyson street had been cut!

FURX 7223 leads the HDENLAU north through Longmont. And in the case, the term "through" is not exaggerating at all! BNSF's Front Range Sub runs right up the middle of Atwood Street in Longmont - houses on either side of the street. The train creeps up the street at a speed of no more that 10 to 12 MPH!

Descending down from Burke Hill, the HDENLAU is less than two miles away from the Valmont Power Plant in Boulder. Note that the third unit in the lineup is MRL F45XR #392!

With a long and heavy train, three classic EMDs (two SD40-2's and an F45XR) work hard to pull and long and heavy HDENLAU north toward Louisville.

It can be very difficult to shoot northbound on the Front Range Sub, particularly between the months of September and March. Regardless, here FURX 7223 (ex-BNSF) leads the HDENLAU north at MP 12. Note the third unit, a Montana Rail Link F45XR #392!

Where's the rest of the water when you need it!? Here, the "class unit" for the GP60M's (BNSF 100, ex-ATSF 100) heads down one of the tracks that leads to "the house". There, the unit will be serviced and prepped for its next assignment.

A very rare consist on the point of the HDENLAU as it prepares to depart BNSF's 31st street yard. FURX 7223, BNSF 7834 and MRL 392 lead the train as it approaches the wye track that will lead it around toward Rennicks.

These four units are fine examples of the two railroads that made up BNSF. Two (BN)SF GP60M's in warbonnet and two BN(SF) SD40-2's in green and white move toward "the house" at 38th Street.

Two southbound coal loads (one stopped, one passing) have high-class lofts as a back drop at 20th Street. The train on the right has two ES44AC's on the point. The train on the left (tied down in the Lodo Siding) has two ES44AC's DPU's on the back. All four units wear the latest BNSF scheme.

Becoming more and more of a common sight, SD70ACe's come through Denver on coal trains (on BNSF) every day. BNSF has over 40 on the roster now, with a total (at this point) of 70 slated to be in the fleet.

The first repaint of a GP60M in the Wedgie / Power Bar / H3 scheme, BNSF 130 sits near the engine house at 38th Street. The unit was fairly well hidden, so this was the best shot I could get.
