You have to love how well the Missouri Pacific heritage unit blends in with the sky on a crystal clear day like this one. UP 1982 leads a slow moving coal train out of Leyden, on the approach to the Simms Street grade crossing.

Missouri Pacific's screaming eagle looks mighty fine on the side of UP 1982 as it leads an eastbound coal load around Big Ten Curve. You can see some of the hoppers on the inside of the curve that serve as a windbreak. Many of them have fallen victim to taggers over the years.

It is a quarter to eight in the morning and 76°F as UP 1982 leads an eastbound coal load toward the west switch of Eisele. The train has a straight shot all the way to Bypass 2 in Denver.

This eastbound coal train was originally called at Bond at 6pm the previous night. It seemed certain that it would arrive in Denver in the dead of night. Fortunately (for the railfans out there), it experienced a major delay in Bond and did not depart until 2am. The crew that was on duty at 6pm only made it to Cliff before their hours expired at 6am. The next crew got the train and it hit plain in beautiful morning light!

Generally speaking, UP's heritage units seem to do a pretty good job of avoiding Colorado. So, when one does show up (as UP 1982 has a few time lately), a lot of effort is often made in getting shots of it! Here, the MoPac unit approaches the grade crossing at Plain.

UP 1982 makes its second appears in as many weeks on an eastbound coal load on the Moffat! A fresh crew got on the train at Cliff (after the previous crew died), and is now bringing the train through Plain.

It's been three years since I last saw UP 2010, UP's unit with a commemorative paint scheme celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the Boy Scouts. In those past three years, the paint has faded significantly on the unit! While UP is touching up the heritage units, something tells me the Boy Scout unit will fade until it gets a standard repaint.

UP 2010 leads an eastbound grain empty east toward the grade crossing at Simms, passing by some grain-like plants growing alongside the right-of-way. Despite the haziness, it is actually a clear day out.

We are smack in the midst of summer in Colorado as an empty grain train rolls east out of Leyden. There is a bit more humidity in the air than is normal for the Denver-Metro (after thunderstorms the previous two days) and the temperature is 93°F.

When the Winter Park Express ran between January and March, Lyft was a sponsor of the train and four Superliners had this wrap applied to them to advertise both the train, and Lyft. Three months after the end of the Winter Park Express for the season and a few of the coach cars still have the wrap applied!

Clouds in the sky that are part of a morning thunderstorm create an interesting pattern as AMTK 207 and AMTK 150 lead the Zephyr west at Blue Mountain Road. AMTK 207 is the highest number P42DC on Amtrak's roster and was also the one most recently delivered. It arrived on the property in 2001.

Running about three hours behind schedule, the westbound Zephyr makes its way around the curve toward Blue Mountain Road. The good news is that there are no eastbounds for the Zephyr to contend with, and the train already has clear signals all the way to Winter Park.

It is a bit of a dark morning this morning as a (somewhat uncommon) morning thunderstorm rolls through the area. The morning has seen winds along the front range of up to 60 MPH, resulting in a slow order for Amtrak ahead around Big Ten Curve.

On a rather gloomy summer morning, the westbound Zephyr is running about three hours late due to some track maintenance projects that are creating some bottlenecks.

If you look closely, you can clearly see part of the train ahead as it is entering Leyden. That part of the train is just to the left of UP 9053. Because the train is 7,000-feet long, it couldn't fit in most of the sidings along the Moffat, Leyden included.
