BNSF's symbol for this train is the HDENPVO1-08A (Denver, CO to Provo, UT). UP recently changed the symbol of this train in its computer system. UP now shows this train as the QFJPVJ-08. "FJ" is for "Fox Junction" and "PV" is for "Provo". The train's counterpart is the QPVCSJ in which "PV" is again Provo, and "CS" is "C&S Junction". These units are often referred to as "Goat Boats". The "Goat" reference comes from the fact that this paint scheme is very close to Great Northern's paint scheme, and the logo for Great Northern included a goat. The "Boat" reference comes from the fact that GE unit were once referred to as "U-Boats" as they had a "U" designation in their models in the 1960s, 70s, and 80s. The train, led by BNSF 8001, will meet an eastbound BNSF manifest here in the siding. BNSF 8001 is an ES44C4, which were primarily designed for fast trains over (relatively) flat routes. However, by the time the train had the east signal in sight, it, too, was an approach. The manifest was following an eastbound coal load that was moving quite slowly, keeping the manifest on yellows. The train had an approach (yellow) signal at the west end as it is following a slow moving coal load. If you look down the tracks a bit on the siding, you'll note the house track at Leyden. Once upon a time (when Rocky Flats was still around), the house track almost always had some hopper cars on it that the West Local would switch. Here, it is leading an eastbound coal train through Arvada. This afternoon, the train will head out on the plains. The question is, will UP 1982 find its way back to Colorado a fourth time?
