An eastbound Provo-Denver kicks up some snow as it glides east down the main at Leyden on clear signals. It has been cold all week long - typically February - so not much snow has melted from the heavy snow three days ago.

Not a site that is particularly common on any main line...or at least not any Class 1 mainline. A single SD70ACe approaches a clear signal at the west end of Leyden. The MNYRO went into the siding at East Portal overnight, unable to make it the final few thousand feet to the Apex in the tunnel. This SD70ACe is being sent to the rescue.

No "tilt shift" effect on this image (see the image before this one for reference). A single UP SD70ACe heads west on the main at Leyden to lend a hand to the MNYRO at East Portal. Meanwhile, the crew on a BNSF Provo-Lincoln manifest ties their train down in the siding as the yard has told them there is currently no room!

One of my favorite "special effects" that can be added to pictures is the "tilt shift" (or "iris shift/blur") effect. When applied, the effect keeps a particular part of the picture...in this case, the SD70ACe...in focus, and gradually blurs the image toward its borders. That's the effect here as a single SD70ACe heads west to rescue the MNYRO in the siding at East Portal.

After getting a bit of sun at Plain, the clouds quickly rolled in and this eastbound manifest rolls through Little Ten Curve at Rocky in the shade.

A good old Colorado snow storm dropped about five inches of snow at Plain overnight, giving way to partly cloudy skies today. Despite some sunlight, the temperature was only 5°F, keeping the snow on the vegetation. BNSF's orange looks great as a trio of GEs lead the Provo-Lincoln through the scene.

BNSF's Provo-Lincoln manifest rolls east down the main at Plain with some beautiful, snowy flat irons as the backdrop. Plain has not been used since five inches of snow fell overnight!

This Provo-Denver is relatively short, with only three engines and 45 cars in tow. It seems that BNSF's Provo-Lincoln manifests are generally longer than the Provo-Denver manifests. The train has a clear signal at the west switch of Leyden here in this February snow storm.

The last Superliner of the westbound Zephyr rolls away from the grade crossing at Crescent. Love how everything in the scene, including the Superliner itself, just screams cold and winter!

The lead P42DC of the westbound California Zephyr crosses the grade crossing at Crescent. It is one of the few grade crossing anywhere close to Denver that has not yet had crossing arms installed!

It does not get much better than this! Well, at least not if you are a fan of trains and winter. The westbound Zephyr glides west on the main at Crescent as lightly falling snow continues to work at blanketing the scene.

Some precipitation came down overnight and early this morning when temps were around 15°F. That led to a nice bit of frost on the just about everything. A nice view for the passengers of the Zephyr as they fly by at track speed near the west end of Leyden.
