This westbound coal empty has been sitting here on the main, just east of the grade crossing, for about 45 minutes. The Zephyr was ahead of it and met an eastbound at Rollins. Cliff was plugged with maintenance of way, so there was nowhere else for the empty to go. Now, the eastbound is out of Crescent and DS-80 and told the crew they can pull into the clear.

It's pretty crazy just how much the city of Arvada (suburb of Denver) has grown in the past twenty years. In 1997, Leyden was practically out in the middle of nowhere. Just a few houses, many with pastures for horses, around. Now, there are five major neighborhoods surrounding Leyden as well as one of Arvada's four high schools (Ralston Valley). An eastbound BNSF manifest takes the siding, skirting the south edge of one of the neighborhoods: The Village at Five Parks.

BNSF's Provo to Denver manifest has a trio of elephant-style GEs leading it into the siding at Leyden. DS-86 aligned the train into the siding with the intention holding it for Amtrak. However, the train made better-than-expected time down the east slope of the Moffat. As a result, DS-86 already has a clear signal setup for the train out the east end. The train will meet the Zephyr at C&S Junction. Note the sole DPU on the end of the (relatively short) train on the right side of the shot.

An eastbound BNSF manifest is approaching the west switch at Leyden. There, it will actually enter the siding. The signal for the siding (well, for westbounds) is visible on the right side of this shot. Note the sign indicating the control point for West Leyden: CP DS013.

This eastbound BNSF manifest departed Provo the day before and has traversed the former Rio Grande along with a UP manifest that is arriving at North Yard right around the time this shot was taken. Hard to tell if the BNSF train was behind the UP train for the entire trip. One or both may have stopped to switch in Grand Junction. The MRONY also had to wait for a recrew at Bond.

This eastbound MRONY crossing 80th Avenue as it continues east past a green flag. A trio of SD70s lead the train, albeit each one being a slightly different model. An SD70ACe is on the point, followed by a Phase 1 SD70M, and finally a Phase 2 SD70M. The Phase 2 SD70Ms (with their flared radiators) are among my favorite modern engines.

On a chilly, overcast morning, an eastbound manifest (Roper, UT to North Yard, CO) departs Leyden on a clear signal. This train departs from Roper on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, typically arriving Denver a day later.

As trains approach the east end of Leyden, the speed limit changes to 45 MPH (on the main). This eastbound in the siding is moving along at less than 10 MPH as it approaches a red signal at the east end of the siding.

An eastbound slows in the siding at Leyden past the remnants of the Leyden Depot. Decades ago, when trains were still the premier form of transportation, many trains running west on the Denver and Salt Lake Railroad would make a station stop here at Leyden.

A pair of units leads up a unit potash train in the siding at Leyden. The train has 70 loads and, in addition to the two units on the point, a pair of DPUs is on the rear. The train is headed for St Paul, MN.

Here is a train that does not run all too often! This is a unit potash train that originated on the Cane Creek Sub in Utah. It is headed for the Hull Avenue Yard in St Paul, MN. The train is taking the siding at Leyden for a meet with the westbound Zephyr.

A trio of GP40-2s (two ex-DRGW and one ex-Espee) glide out of Rocky on the journey back east toward North Yard. There is only one industry still served by the West Local. The aggregate plant at the north end of the Rocky Spur. As such, the West Local is typically only 1-4 cars in length. In addition, it typically only runs one out of every 2-3 Wednesdays. A decade ago, when Rocky Flats was still being cleaned up, the local ran for four units twice a week and sometimes had as many as 35 cars. Oh, how times have changed! Why have three units for such a short train? The same used are used on the South Local as well (when three units are often needed). It is easier to keep them together then break them up just for the Wednesday run.

UP 1349, leading the West Local out of Rocky here, is no stranger to Colorado. Or, for that matter, the Moffat. This is ex-DRGW 3128. It has managed to hang around Denver almost exclusively since the days of the Rio Grande!
