This AC4400CW has spent a lot of time on the Moffat, as it was originally delivered in June 1995 in scarlet and gray as SP 278. With the car now part of the consist, the train is continuing east toward town. The yardmaster at North Yard informed the train that they will actually head to the 36th Street Yard, crossing the Belt Industrial Lead. The train had to flag by the west switch as a PTC problem prevented DS-378 from getting the train a light. The conductor will reboard the train and it will continue west at restricted speed until encounter a more favorable signal. There is a PTC problem at the west switch this morning, and DS-378 cannot set up a signal for the train. The conductor will have to put the switch in hand throw and the train will flag by the signal. Rumor had it that UP had redirected them to run over the Overland and then over Soldier Summit. However, recently there seems to be a new increase on the Moffat, hopefully marking a return of UP oil trains in Colorado. Above the work train, in the siding at Eisele (Clay), an eastbound UP manifest is patiently waiting its turn to head east. The train, which has the symbol WNYNYT-27, is headed for the siding at Plain. The "W" at the start of the train symbol indicates this is a work train. The "T" at the end of the symbol (before the date: "-27") indicates the work train is a tie train. As you can see, the gondolas are filled with ties. New ballast has been laid, and ties and tie plates are being replaced. Not one, but two work trains are both seen in this shot. One work train is coming out of the house track at Rocky, and another came out of the storage yard at North Yard and is headed for Plain. UP 1603 has spent its entire life on UP's roster, delivered as SD40-2 #3349 in March 1977. The second unit start as a Chicago Northwestern unit, delivered as CNW 6862 in April 1974. Each of those times, the train was long enough that the crew brought a wide cab GE unit out of North Yard for the trip east. However, with only 37 cars, a pair of SD40-2s (now designated as SD40Ns after being rebuilt) were all that was needed for the train on this Sunday as it passes by hay bales just west of Agate. Cedar point is now a stub siding, it's east switch having been removed many years ago. The result is a near-5,000 foot stub track here on the Colorado plains. The train is going to meet a rare daylight manifest at Limon. Alas, I was unable to get a shot of the meet as I had to head home. UP recently started running a once-weekly manifest between Sharon Springs, KS and Denver, CO, after nearly a decade of no regular manifests running on the line.
