Yard Shots LTEX
There is a new rail park under construction out east along UP's Limon Subdivision near the town of Bennett, CO, about 30 miles east of downtown Denver. The new rail park has already received one unit for switching, and LTEX is going to become the second! I'm not sure of the history of this bright blue GP38-2.

The cab of this LTEX leasing unit has patches on the cab representing the United States Coast Guard, Air Force, Navy, Army, and Marines. A nice little solute to the armed forces and veterans.

This GP38-2 is going to be delivered to a new rail park located near Bennett, CO. The Limon Local is going to make the delivery later in the day today. It is coupled to the C44ACM that will serve as the lead unit on the local.

UP's Limon Local is pulling into the three track yard at the west end of the KYLE railroad. After dropping off 40 cars for the KYLE, the local will pick up the string of tank cars here that the KYLE left for the local.

The KYLE was formed in 1982 by the Willis B Kyle Organization after the fall of the Rock Island. The railroad has gone through several owners over the years, and since 2012, it has been owned by the Genesee & Wyoming. The railroad operate roughly 510 miles of track, with 420 miles in Kansas, and the 90 or so remaining miles in eastern Colorado.

UP's Limon Local is leaving the mainline behind to drop off 40 cars with the KYLE railroad. The Limon Depot rests right in between UP's Limon Subdivision (to the left) and the west end of the KYLE railroad.

UP 7719 leads the Limon Local right by the Limon Depot. This track was once owned by the Rock Island until its demise in 1980. Rock Island trains coming from Chicago would join the UP KP line here in Limon for the trip west to Denver. Now, the line is owned by the KYLE railroad.

As far as I know, UP has all of it DC GE-fleet in long term storage. UP 9755 is an example of a C44-9W that is currently in 36th Street. UP has taken some of these older units and rebuilt them into C44ACM, with AC traction motors.

UP 3854 sits in a long string of units at 36th Street that are in long term storage. Of the roughly 1,400 SD70Ms that UP ordered in the early 2000s, I am curious as to just how many are currently sitting in storage, not being used.

The Rocky Mountaineer departed Denver this morning for Moab, UT. The two GP40-3s are working at the moment, so the SD40M-2 is being left behind in Denver with the SD18 that is used for switching.

Union Pacific has a pretty substantial maintenance project coming up. They are going to replace the ties throughout the 6.2 mile long Moffat Tunnel. The project includes quite a bit of fresh ballast as well. This ballast train is on Track 1 in North Yard. Currently, there is no power...but eventually, the train will be taken west, up to the Moffat.

Yard Shots Norfolk Southern, Union Pacific
The poles around North Yard make this a bit of a tricky shot to get, but I thought it was worth it as it could be representative of the future. At the end of July, Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern announced their intention to merge. There are many regulatory hurdles for the railroads to overcome, but if they end up getting approval to merge, this is a scene that will become far more common.

A pair of GP38-2s sit near the North Yard yard tower, awaiting their next switching assignment. UP 737, technically now a GP38N after a rebuild, just celebrated its 45th birthday! It was originally delivered to Missouri Pacific as MP 2237 in August 1980.

Amtrak, working with the Washington State Department of Transportation, came up with a nice looking paint scheme for this AIRO train set that will run in the Cascades. The green scheme, with the Mt Rainier stamps, looks very nice. Here, the train set is back toward BNSF's 31st Yard so it can depart south on the Joint Line.
