I had heard that UP is slowly clearing out a lot of the units that have been stored in Grand Junction, which is likely where this relic of the 1980s and 1990s came from. Not sure if it is going to head for storage, a rebuild, sale, or the scrapper. Considering a chunk of the long hood behind the dynamic brake fan is missing at the top, I'm guessing the disposition might not be great! BNSF's tracks cross UP's Belt Lead at Utah Junction, and the diamond is controlled by Union Pacific DS-378. The five Yardmasters on the payroll were offered transfers to other locations to enter train service (conductors, engineers, etc). There is now some sort of Yard Manager, different from an actual Yardmaster, in control of the yard. Reports from folks I know that work for Union Pacific are indicating that North Yard is a complete mess at the moment. Indeed, the yard does look must fuller than it has in quite awhile. The train has made a round trip between Denver and Cheyenne. The day before, UP 1996 was assigned to a work train that ran on the Moffat and laid ballast around Big Ten Curve. The ballast train returned to Denver, and UP 1996 (and two other units) were removed from the train, left here on Yard Track 1. The fourth being UP 1996, the Espee Heritage Unit. There is a string of SD70Ms also coupled behind UP 1996, but they will definitely all be deadheading to Cheyenne when the train departs later tonight. UP has laid off the vast majority of the folks capable of doing major repairs on engines in Denver. Anything too major will result in the unit being moved to North Platte, NE and Bailey Yard. Something else worth mentioning is that this unit is very used to being in North Yard! It was originally delivered to Rio Grande as DRGW 3121 in September 1974!
