The ES44C4 has become extremely popular on BNSF. In the last three years, nearly 1,000 of these units has appeared on BNSF property! The unit is different from an ES44AC in that it only has four traction motors. The center axles on both trucks are not powered, giving this unit an A1A-A1A configuration rather than a C-C configuration. This results in a unit similar to a four-axle unit, but with the weight distributed over six axles.

This snowy December afternoon was a good day for finding Warbonnets around town. Hostlers were moving three units, which included this Warbonnet SD75I, from the yard to the engine house. When BNSF reactivated their SD75Ms and SD75Is, they also renumbered them in order to make room for new delivers. The new numbers actually reflect the original numbers when the units were delivered to Santa Fe. In the case above, BNSF 282.

BNSF was leasing this ex-SOO SD60, now owned by CIT Rail Resources, and put it on the point of "Beer Run". The train is pulling out of track 31 in BNSF's yard, preparing to double over to track 32 before departing toward the Golden Sub. Note the winterization hatch covering the radiator fan furthest forward. This was a common feature on SOO units.

With the recent surge in the rail industry, Class 1 railroads have been pulling out all the stops and reactivating older power. BNSF activated (and renumbered) their SD75Ms and SD75Is, the majority of which still wear the Warbonnet scheme. One such example is BNSF 205 (which, until recently, was BNSF 8205), seen here in Denver on a cold final day in November.

Even though BNSF's "New Image" scheme has been around for nearly ten years now, you can still find a fair number of C44-9Ws (in the 1000-series) that wear the "Heritage" scheme. The scheme, and the "Heritage 2" scheme, were both developed as tributes to the Great Northern, one of the original railroads that merged to form Burlington Northern.

Amtrak is backing down toward the newly built "Train Hall" at Union Station. Note the track that comes to a sudden end to the left. This track will be part of the commuter rail line being constructed from Denver to Arvada and Wheat Ridge (the "Gold Line").
