Nothing too special here. Just a sharp looking ES44AC that seemed to merit a nice roster shot. While I love action shots, I also enjoy collected roster shots of an many units as I can. 30 years from now, this will be a classic shot of a unit that likely will either have been retired, or is being used on locals and in switching!

BNSF's SD60Ms have disappeared from and reappeared on the system a couple times over the last 15 years. When business has slowed and there has been a surplus of power, the SD60Ms have been put in storage. With the recent boom in oil, virtually all stored power has been put back on the active roster. Here, a pair of SD60Ms (recently patched in to the 1400-series) is moved toward the engine house by some yard hostlers.

Here is a beast that is becoming less and less common. Classic switch engines are being retired by UP more frequently. This MP15AC was one of the lucky one to go through a rebuild program (and is now designated an MP15N) and should hang around for awhile longer.

A variety of power hangs out at the fuel rack and surrounding tracks in North Yard. For years after the UP/SP merger, you could count on finding at least a little bit of scarlet and gray in shots like this. Those days are pretty much behind us at this point, as Armour Yellow is the paint scheme of decade.

UP 1459 sits on the "Run Around" track at North Yard, awaiting for its next assignment. The power to the right is switching, working on the yard ladder. The empty track on the left side of the shot is called the "Third Rail".

A pair of SD40-2s starts pulling on a long string of double stacks out of the loading area at Rennicks. These containers are quite possibly bound for Chicago on the highest priority train BNSF runs out of Denver, the ZDENCHI. If that is the case, they will see an early morning departure the following day.

Located on the east side of UP's North Yard in BNSF's Rennicks Yard. This yard represents BNSF's intermodal presence in Denver (which, admittedly, isn't much). BNSF runs an intermodal train between Denver and Tacoma, WA and one between Denver and Chicago, IL. Thus, the two tracks located at Rennicks are sufficient to get the job done! Here, a pair of SD40-2s prepare to pull a string of double stack containers south.

Business is currently good for UP in Denver! North Yard is pretty well filled to capacity. The Greeley Sub is rumored to be the business single track line on the UP right now. There is a ton of traffic running between La Salle and Fort Collins...so much so, in fact, that UP is now running a dedicated train between North Yard and La Salle!

If you look, you are likely to find shots taken from this same basic perspective over the years. 30 years ago, you'd probably see a pair of Rio Grande GP30s sitting along the tracks outside the yard office. And, of course, the UP shield would not have been there, but "Rio Grande" in fly letters would have been, along the top of the tower.

A pair of sharp-looking GP40-2s sit on the "run around" track in North Yard, awaiting their next assignment. One of these two units is very familiar with North Yard as it has called it home for a very long time. UP 1359 started life as DRGW 3118. It was patched to its current number on September 15, 2005 and received a full repaint in 2013. UP 1459, 100 numbers higher, started life as (Cotton Belt) SSW 7600. It was patched in 2002 and fell into solid UP colors around the same time as UP 1359.

I realize this is the third picture showing these CSX units sitting in BNSF's yard. The reason I wanted to add this one is I found the (former) SOO unit in the background an interesting addition. CSX and SOO, two railroads that don't (or didn't) operate anywhere near Colorado, both represented in this single shot in Denver!

In order to facilitate the arrival of new units on the roster, BNSF has been shuffling some older units around. In some instances, the change had to be done rather hastily! Such is the case with the B40-8, formerly in the 8600-series. Some quick number boards and an interesting red and white patch on the cab moved this unit in to the 500-series.

An interesting pair of (borrowed) CSX units were hanging around near BNSF's engine house on this particular afternoon. This shot does a nice job of comparing and contrasting CSX's older "Gray" scheme (on the C40-8) with their newer "Dark Future" scheme (on the ex-Conrail SD60I).

Has there ever been (or will there ever be) an engine as amazing as the SD40-2? With very few exceptions, every railroad in the United States, Canada, and Mexico owned at least a few SD40-2s. And now, 40 years later, railroads are still rebuilding them and keeping them on the roster. Granted they are used for switching and local work more often than in mainline service now, but it still cool to see them on the rail. How much longer will that last?

The face of a rare visitor on the left of this picture! CSX units don't show up in Denver all that often...and when they do, the typically are not standard cab GE units. However, on this snowy March 1st, a CSX C40-8 was among the BNSF units near BNSF's engine house in Denver.
