Unfortunately, it is unlikely that an MRL unit will ever lead on a train in Colorado, as the MRL units are not equipped with PTC. MRL never installed PTC on its mainlines. The units will likely eventually get PTC installed, but that will likely happen at the same time as a repaint into standard BNSF colors. The unit is clearly a former GP35, as you can see where the smaller center radiator fan once existed at the back of the long hood. It has since been rebuilt as a GP39-3. The work was done on a Sunday as a BNSF switch job works on the industries that the turnout accesses the rest of the week. It was indeed replaced earlier in the day, and crews are now working to place fresh ballast to complete the work. The curfew actually necessitated the morning Zephyr being delayed by four hours, so it departed Chicago the day before four hours late, running at #1005 (instead of #5), with the entire schedule being delayed by four hours. BNSF frequently runs oil trains with six units on the head end, so the power is present to run eastbound (on the oil load) in a 3x3 configuration. However, these three units are the only units on this westbound. BNSF will be getting three additional units from somewhere else when the train is ready to head east. The tracks here run (more or less) north-south, with eastbounds heading south. Thus, almost any time of year and almost any time of day, you can find decent lighting for an eastbound. The train has its normal 3x2 configuration, along with 106 cars in between the power. In this shot, the train is wrapping its way through the S-Curves at Blue Mountain Drive.
