UP 7609 and two additional units leads a very long MNYGR on the main at Platteville. The 9600-foot train is well-blocked, with stretches of like cars that are probably headed to the same customer, or at least the same city. The train is slow rolling as it just passed an Approach (yellow) signal. It is meeting a southbound that has not yet cleared the north switch.

UP 7609 crosses County Road 14½ on the way north on the Greeley Sub. This train is UP's daily North Yard to Green River, WY manifest, and is quite massive today. The train was broken across three tracks in North Yard due to its length. The train has 166 cars, totaling 9,618 feet in length! Pretty impressive, particularly when considering there are only three units!

A couple years ago, UP's Greeley Sub was the busiest single track mainline in the country! I am not sure if it still holds that title today in 2025. Regardless, it is still a very busy mainline. Not only due to through trains, but there are dozens of customers that are active along the line, taking and making shipments by rail. UP 9795 is taking the siding here at Platteville as two northbounds, one through and one local, are both out of Brighton.

At Platteville, the MGRNY takes the siding for a meet with two northbounds. The first will be this trains counterpart, the MNYGR which departed from North Yard in Denver about 90 minutes earlier. UP 9795's train is 5500 feet long, which will easily fit in the siding. However, the train will hang out the north end of the siding for a little while so it can avoid blocking County Road 32, one of the main roads in town.

No stops in La Salle on this Sunday for UP's Green River, WY to North Yard manifest. La Salle has a yard, and is the base of operations for several locals that serve customers along the Greeley Sub. Some manifests will stop here to pick up or drop off cars, but such is not the case for UP 9795 today.

As UP 9795 heads south out of La Salle, take note of the siding as it bows out and away from the mainline before converging with the main at the switch. This is very common with many sidings and is done to provide a better angle for the siding as it joins the main at the switch. This can allow trains to proceed through the switch at a slightly higher speed than they would otherwise be allowed.

Just south of the bridge that crosses the South Platte River, UP 9795 crosses over Latham Ditch. This is an irrigation ditch that actually branches off from the South Platte just a few thousand feet west of this picture.

UP's Green River, WY to North Yard manifest (MGRNY) crosses over a very low South Platte River just north of La Salle. Hopefully, with temperatures increasing, the spring runoff will start soon and the river will get filled up a bit more.

A single DPU, facing into the train, brings up the tail end of this eastbound MGJNY in Arvada. This particular unit has been rebuilt as a C44ACM, but was in fact originally delivered to UP as an AC4400CW in September 1996.

This eastbound train might look like a coal train, but in fact it is UP's MGJNY (manifest). These IPPX hoppers have likely been stuck in long term storage either somewhere in the Grand Junction yard, or in a siding in the Utah desert. Where are they headed now? Not sure...

A C44ACM and an AC4400CW lead the MGJNY through the cut in Arvada between Carr Street and 66th Avenue. The first unit was recently rebuilt at UP's North Little Rock shops. UP 6410 was originally SP 327, delivered in scarlet and gray in July 1995.

UP's thrice weekly manifest, the MGJNY, is crossing 66th Avenue in Arvada. The train has a handful of covered hoppers, followed by at least a full trainset of empty coal hoppers.

From a railfan "keeping an eye on the rails when I can" perspective, it seems as though UP has been running more trains on the Moffat lately. Note only has there seemingly been an slight uptick in oil train traffic, but I have noticed several coal trains run on the Moffat in the last 10 days as well. Here, an eastbound oil train, with three GEs on the point, is approaching the west end of Leyden.

An eastbound UP oil train rounds the curve that will take it to a clear (green) signal at the west end of Leyden. If you look closely, you can spot the trio of DPUs that have been cut in to the train, roughly 2/3s of the way back.

This GP40-2 (now designated as a GP40N after UP did some rebuilding) is no stranger to these rails! It has been roaming on the Moffat off and on for 53 years! It was delivered to Rio Grande as DRGW 3105 in April 1972. Today, it is leading the West Local back toward North Yard with a string of 41 gondolas in tow.
