The westbound Zephyr has slowed down quite a bit as it knocks down a clear (green) signal at the west switch of Plain, ready to head into Tunnel 2 and the start of the Tunnel District. The west switch of Plain is also a check point for the Zephyr, and if you have your scanner with you, you can hear the crew call out "check point".

It is an unusually humid morning along the Front Range with overcast skies and the threat of severe thunderstorms later on. Meanwhile, AMTK 160 and AMTK 174 lead the Zephyr west toward Rainbow Cut on the main at Plain.

The Evelyn Henry and Warren Henry private cars (part of the Patrick Henry collection) head west on the tail end of the Zephyr just west of the west portal of Tunnel 1. These same two cars actually made an appearance on the back of #5 on this same Thursday exactly one year ago (June 15, 2023).

A pair of Patrick Henry private cars (the Evelyn A. Henry and Warren R. Henry) are bringing up the tail end of the westbound Zephyr this morning. These are probably the two most common private cars to appear on the Zephyr in recent years. Amtrak greatly increased their fees for hauling private cars, and imposed many restrictions on where they could be picked up or dropped off. That has led to a significant decrease in private cars making appearances on Amtrak.

The morning Zephyr is rolling west through the S-Curves at Blue Mountain Drive, running right on time. There are two private cars on the end of the train that were added during the station stop in Denver. Picking up or dropping off private cars can often lead to a delay in departure, but not this morning!

Some clouds have moved in and are casting shadows in the area just west of Crescent as the Zephyr heads toward the east portal of Tunnel 19. Note the dam for Gross Reservoir in the distance, a primary supply of water for Denver and some of the surrounding areas.

AMTK 155 leads the morning westbound Zephyr through a cut just west of Crescent. The train will follow the tracks through the curve in the foreground which lead in to the east portal of Tunnel 19. The train is almost 32 miles west of Denver Union Station here.

Here is a shot you do not expect to see in Colorado! Amtrak westbound Zephyr meeting an eastbound coal train that has a Canadian National SD70M-2 bringing up the tail end. The blue and red contrast between the two railroads looks quite nice at the west switch of Rocky.

Throughout the course of a year, there is obviously lots of different color in the landscape as the season change. Of all the different scenes that appear, I think the scenes dominated by green landscape and blue skies are just about my favorite. Such is the case here as the westbound Zephyr emerges from Tunnel 1 and heads toward Plain.

The foliage has reached its peak green levels at Eisele in a beautiful scene as the westbound Zephyr passes by on the main track at Eisele (Clay). It does look like the Lounge car, third from the end, could stand to receive some cleaning and/or polishing.
