There are a lot of bushes and trees near the west end of Eisele (Clay), which means this spot always make for a really nice picture. Here, the westbound Zephyr just knocked down a clear (green) signal at the west end and is continuing west.

The south edge of Big Ten Curve is not actually a curve at all! There is a straight stretch of track that is about 1,500 feet long between the east edge of Big Ten (by the wind break hoppers) and the curve that heads in to Eisele (Clay).

The sun is shining and it is a beautiful morning as the Zephyr makes its way around Big Ten Curve. The train is passing by the open hoppers serving as a wind break on the inside the curve. Those hoppers have endured a lot of graffiti over the last few decades.

AMTK 18 and AMKT 157 are the power on the westbound Zephyr this morning. The train is running on time, although losing a little bit of time as UP has a 10 MPH slow order out and around Big Ten. So the train is slowly making its way up and around.

The westbound Zephyr is coming through Little Ten Curve toward the west end of Rocky. Until the mid-1980s, the west end of Rocky was actually located right near the end of the Zephyr in this shot. Rio Grande extended the siding west through Little Ten Curve to accommodate longer trains...mainly coal trains.

The westbound California Zephyr wraps around the outside of Big Ten Curve. You can see the the open hoppers behind the train to the left, sitting on the inside of the curve. The hoppers have now been there for over half a century!

Union Pacific has a daily slow order around Big Ten Curve between 10am and 6pm due to high heat and the concern of sun kinks. Since that 10 MPH slow order went in to effect 20 minutes earlier, the Zephyr is slow climbing up the north leg of Big Ten Curve.

As we move closer to July, the green in the landscape along the Front Range is starting to fade back toward the brownish color that it is most of the year. The Zephyr, with Phase 5 AMTK 76 and Phase 7 AMTK 174 has a baggage car and the standard seven Superliners in tow just west of Leyden.

The westbound Zephyr lost about an hour between Lincoln, NE and Hastings, NE. The train made up a bit of that time east of Denver, but was still about 50 minutes late departing west out of Denver. Here, the Denver skyline stands in the haze on this summer morning as the train departs west out of Leyden.

A couple of unusual things to note about the westbound Zephyr in this shot on Father's Day morning. First, the lead unit is P40DC #824. Now, technically, this unit has been rebuilt to P42DC standards, but the number makes it a bit unusual as not many (ex) P40DCs are still running on Amtrak's roster. The second oddity is the lack of a baggage car. Interestingly, running without a baggage car tends to be the norm for the Southwest Chief, but that is far less common with the Zephyr.

The westbound Zephyr is between Simms Street and 80th avenue, running right on time, on a beautiful Father's Day morning. The Denver skyline stands tall in the distance and you can see that the ditch lights are oscillating on the lead unit, horn blowing for the 80th Avenue crossing.

The westbound Zephyr passes in and out of the relatively short (214-foot-long) Tunnel 7 in the Tunnel District. Just ahead at Tunnel 8, the train will make a sharp turn to the left, taking it into the Rocky Mountains on it journey west.

The westbound Zephyr has quite the colorful consist on it this morning, sporting the "Pepsi Can" scheme (a variant on Phase 3) and a Phase 7. The train is in the Tunnel District, though still able to see the front range as it heads geographically north, and moves between Tunnels 3 and 4.
