AMTK 198 and AMTK 157 lead the westbound Zephyr in some nice afternoon light. Great for photography, but not great for the passengers as the train is running right around 6 1/2 hours late.

Just east of the east switch of Rocky, the westbound Zephyr is stopped and is waiting for a signal to proceed west down the main at Rocky.

The conductor on #5 is standing in the door at the rear of the Zephyr, protecting a reverse move out of the siding at Rocky. The Zephyr took the siding behind a westbound oil train. In order to keep Amtrak moving as quickly as possible, DS-78 provided a signal out the east end of Rocky. Once the head end clears the east switch, the train will wait for a signal to proceed west around the oil train.

Amtrak's Phase 7 paint scheme is, in my opinion, the best looking Amtrak scheme since the Phase 3 scheme in the 1980s. AMTK 174 and AMTK 82 are, at the time of this photo, the only two P42DCs wearing the new scheme.

The eastbound Zephyr is departing Rocky on the main after meeting a westbound oil train and the westbound Zephyr, sitting in the siding. Winds gusting as high as 90 MPH in the previous 24 hours have taken their toll in area. Note the hood of the signal on the right side of the frame, blown off to the side on the face of the signal.

The morning westbound Zephyr is actually the afternoon westbound Zephyr as it is running 6 1/2 hours late. The signal at east Rocky looks like it is showing a "red over dark" indication. However, the bottom signal is actually flashing red. The train has a restricting signal in to the siding at Rocky, behind a westbound oil train.

The newest and the oldest Amtrak paint schemes are represented on the two P42DCs on the point of the eastbound California Zephyr, wrapping through the S-Curves at Blue Mountain Road. This Zephyr is running 21 hours late! Indeed today's eastbound Zephyr is only three hours behind.

AMTK 174 (Phase 7) and AMTK 161 (Phase 1 Heritage) lead the eastbound California Zephyr at Blue Mountain Road. The interesting thing, however, is that this is actually yesterday's #6. Extremely high winds the day before stopped Amtrak at Fraser. And there it sat for approximately 22 hours! Here, the train is 21 hours late.

The Phase 7 scheme on AMTK 174 is indeed the "go-forward" scheme for Amtrak. Amtrak has announced that as both power and passenger cars require maintenance, Amtrak will slowly be repainting them in the Phase 7 scheme.

The California Zephyr is combined with the equipment from the Winter Park Express on the main at Plain. The combined trainsets are reminiscent of 40 years ago in the 1980s when the California Zephyr was combined with the Pioneer and Desert Wind between Chicago and Salt Lake City. Would be great if passenger levels allowed for train lengths like this on a regular basis in 2024!

A substantially longer (and more colorful) than normal westbound Zephyr climbs up the grade to the east portal of Tunnel 1. Two of the five P42DCs and five of the Superliners (on the end of the train) were picked up in Denver. Equipment used on the Winter Park Express Ski Train in the 2023-2024 winter season. With the season complete, the equipment heads west to Emeryville to be put back in standard service. A fellow railfan sits atop Tunnel 1 in a red shirt, capturing the unique scene.

AMTK 23 leads four other P42DCs, a baggage car, and 12 Superliners on the grinding climb up the 2% grade to Tunnel 1. The extra units and five of the Superliners were picked up in Denver this morning as they were used on the Winter Park Express Ski Train this winter season. A season that ended three days earlier on Easter Sunday.

Five P42DCs lead the westbound Zephyr across the classic Rio Grande bridge that crosses CO-72 at the base of Coal Creek Canyon. The scene was viewed from the top of Tunnel 1. I applied an effect known as "Iris Shift" that blurs the perimeter of the photos, drawing the attention to the train.

Seeing the California Zephyr on this morning makes me think of the 1980s when the California Zephyr, Pioneer, and Desert Wind were all combined as a single train between Denver and Salt Lake City! On this morning, however, only the first seven Superliners actually have passengers in them. The five cars at the end are all empty as they were picked up in Denver. These are the Superliners that were used on the Winter Express Ski Train this winter. The season just ended last Sunday.

This has got to be one of the most colorful consists of Amtrak power since the first days of Amtrak when they used units from various freight roads! In addition to three Phase 5 P42DCs, AMTK 174 (Phase 7) and AMTK 161 (Phase 1) are both in the consist as well.
