In fact, the last five cars of the train are the Superliners that were used on the Winter Park Express Ski Train this winter season. The unit came to Denver a week earlier and was used on a special move on BNSF's Front Range Sub from Denver to Longmont (and back) the previous day. The train has a track warrant that will take it all the way back to Denver. A northbound BNSF Denver-Laurel manifest is in the siding at Broomfield, waiting for the special to arrive before continuing north. The move is part of some early steps to try to bring Amtrak intercity trains along the Front Range in Colorado. There are two bridges that cross Arapahoe Road here, due to a widening of the road several years ago. The train ran 1x1 north and, of course, will do so for the trip south as well. Several people who took the train north, including Colorado Governor Jared Polis, will actually take the purple bus (parking on the street above AMTK 174) back to Denver rather than returning on the train. All but 10 of the new ALC-42 Chargers will sport this new scheme. AMTK 174 is, as of the date of this picture, the only P42DC to receive the scheme. The city of Longmont shut down the intersection and grade crossing at Emery Street. The train came to a stop right across the street and the passengers on board, including Colorado Governor Jared Polis, de-boarded and went to a pub for a quick conversation. Alas, Mother Nature had other plans as a low ceiling of clouds completely obscured the mountains. With no flatirons visible, the special Amtrak move passes through Niwot along the Diagonal highway that connects Boulder and Longmont. To simplify the move, a P42DC was put on either end of the train. AMTK 169 was the unit on the south end and would lead for the trip back to Denver later in the afternoon.
