At the siding of Mesa, UP's Limon Local is headed east on the main track. The sun was just a few minutes away from poking out from behind the clouds, but it set up this interesting mix of light and dark! The training is approaching the east end of CTC on the Limon Sub. After passing by the east switch of Limon, the train enters track warrant territory.

The conductor for the Limon Local is closely watching the train as it rolls by on Main 1 eastbound. He is looking at the brakes on each car is rolls by to ensure all brakes have been released. After the train completely rolls by, the conductor will get a ride to the head end for the train to continue east onto the plains.

I shot the Limon Local a week earlier, and the leader the crew was given was in much better shape than this AC4400CW! This particular unit is probably wearing the same paint as when it was delivered to Union Pacific in November 1995. An interesting note about this unit. It was actually ordered by Chicago North Western. But it was ready for delivery after the UP acquired the CNW, so it was delivered in UP colors.

A pair of GEs brings up the tail end of a westbound ballast train, currently in the siding at Rocky. These ballast cars, incidentally, are pretty amazing. They each have onboard computers and satellite link-ups. Each car knows where it is on the rails and how fast the train is moving (when it is moving). This allows the ballast cars to automatically dump ballast at the exact correct rate. As a result of being GPS enabled, the cars stop dumping ballast when crossing grade crossing and over switches.

This westbound ballast train was setup in a 3x2 configuration. However, when it started pulling out of the siding at Rocky, the drawbar on the front of the lead ballast car broke, and the train went into emergency. Fortunately, the train was not further west when it broken, as there is a chance the train would've blocked the mainline.
