It is hard to believe, but it has been five years (almost to the day) since UP ran a regular freight over the Moffat between Denver and Salt Lake City. The final MRONY (Manifest, Roper, UT to North Yard, CO) ran on December 8, 2018. Any freight traffic running from Denver to Salt Lake on UP now travels on this train. The MNYGR (Manifest, North Yard, CO to Green River, WY). From there, cars are placed on a new train, the MGRRO (Manifest, Green River, WY to Roper, UT). The train is just getting underway out of Denver, passing through Commerce City and crossing Sand Creek by the Suncor refinery.

UP's North Yard to Green River manifest is passing by the Suncor refinery in Commerce City, ready to start its journey north on the Greeley Sub. The train occasionally has work that needs to be done between Denver and Speer along the Greeley. But not today! It will be a straight shot for the crew.

A UP unit oil train rolls off UP's Belt Industrial Lead and heads south on the Greeley Sub toward 36th Street. In the foreground, the Purina pet food plant stands tall alongside I-70. Note the Suncor oil refinery off in the distance.

Northeast of Denver is the city of Commerce City. It is appropriately named as there is a lot of commerce that that happens here. Just north of Sand Creek Junction, you can see many yard tracks and multiple businesses with customers in need of cars. A southbound UP manifest on the mainline cuts through the scene about 10 minutes prior to sunset.

UP 4419 is currently serving as the Rolla switcher. Rolla is a yard just north of Denver that serves as UP's main auto facility for the Denver area. If you purchased a new car in the Denver area, there is a chance it arrived via Union Pacific and was shuffled through Rolla.

A northbound manifest crosses 96th Avenue, just south of Hazeltine. It seems that AC4400CWs are making a bit of a come back. On this particularly afternoon, I saw far more of those than any ES44s. A trio leads this manifest as it heads out of Denver.

A trio of AC4400CWs, one of which is CSX, rolls slowly south in the siding at Hazeltine. The train will meet a northbound manifest here before continuing on in to North Yard.

A visitor from the east is on the southbound MGRNY this afternoon. CSX 400 is an AC4400CW that is still wearing the older CSX gray and blue paint scheme.

This is my personal favorite model of any wide cab model EMD has produced to date. Not just the SD70M, but specifically the Phase 2 SD70M. It has the slightly slanted radiator intakes, similar to the SD45, but not quite as large as the SD70ACe. The original wide cab nose and tear drop windshields are also a fantastic touch.

UP has taken to using SD70Ms for locals on the Greeley Sub. After seeing three locals on this day, all three had SD70Ms for power. Here, UP 4059 sits with a string of covered hoppers, waiting for a southbound manifest here at Brighton.

The sun is getting low in the western sky as a southbound UP manifest overtakes a southbound military train sitting in the siding. The manifest, UP's MGRNY originated in Green River, WY and is headed for North Yard. The military train is going to have to run south through North Yard as well, so I am not sure why the military train is being run around.

A southbound local led by an SD70M is being overtaken by a southbound manifest led by an C44AC-CTE at La Salle. The side-by-side of the EMD and GE units makes for a pretty good comparison.

UP has a small yard in La Salle, CO. Several locals originate and terminate here in La Salle, UP 4528 being one such local. The train is stopped on the siding as a southbound manifest approaches alongside the train from the north.

With the advent of LED lighting technology, new block signals now use LED rather than traditional incandescent bulbs. The LEDs are more reliable, more energy efficient, and far brighter. As you can see, similar to LED stoplights, any one color is actually composed of dozens of LED lights. This is the northbound control signal at the south end of Platteville on the UP Greeley Sub.
