A quartet of units leads BNSF's Denver to Provo manifest up the 1% grade between Grassy and Cedar. US-6, which has generally had the tracks in view since Whitehouse, will now lose site of the tracks until reaching the town of Wellington. You can see US-6 in the distance in this shot.

A BNSF manifest is slowing to around 35 MPH in preparation for the multiple curves it is approaching. The curves provide for a minimal grade...around 1%...for the climb from Grassy up to the siding of Cedar and points west as the train gets closer to the real start of Soldier Summit.

The siding of Desert is one of my favorite places to hang out and shoot trains in the Utah desert. First off, it is just such an appropriately named siding. Second, it is on a long, straight stretch of track where trains can get up to full track speed. Finally, it offers an amazing view with the Book Cliffs creating a perfect backdrop to the east of the tracks.

Highball Desert! BNSF's Denver-Provo manifest crosses the bridge at MP 566.93, kicking up dust as it moves along at 60 MPH. The train approaches a clear (green) signal at the east end of the siding of Desert. A siding that currently cannot be used for meets as it is filled with cars in storage.

Making its way through the S-Curve east of Thompson, four BNSF units lead a Denver-Provo manifest through the Utah desert. The train met the eastbound Zephyr at Cisco, but will not meet another train before reaching two main tracks at Helper.

Not far from the relative ghost town of Thompson, UT, this westbound BNSF Denver-Provo skirts along Book Cliffs in a relatively green desert.

BNSF's Provo-Denver manifest, the near-daily manifest BNSF runs over the Moffat, sits idly in the siding at Leyden. BNSF's 31st Street Yard had no room for the train, so it was tied down in the siding here. A BNSF crew will be dispatched to retrieve it once room opens up.

A trio of GEs leads BNSF's Provo-Denver into Tunnel 1 just east of Plain. You can see all the earth churn in the background as part of the construction of the new housing development called Canyon Pines. No construction on houses has started just yet as the landscaping and roads are still under construction.

This eastbound BNSF manifest is knocking down a clear (green) signal at the east end of Plain. The siding at Plain is currently occupied by maintenance of way equipment at the west end. Not ideal as it is the only siding over 6,000 feet long between Rocky and Cliff. In the distance and slightly to the right in the frame, you can clearly see the east portal of Tunnel 4.

The head end of this BNSF manifest rolls through the colorful curve at Rainbow Cut as the back half of the train is visible in the distance at the west end of Plain. Rainbow Cut is appropriately named, as you can seeing various colors of the rainbow, ranging from reds to oranges to blues to purples.

In this shot, you can see from the head end of this manifest on the main at Plain on the left, all the way back to near the tail end at Tunnel 4 on the right. Despite having clear (green) signals coming down the Tunnel District, the crew was surprised to find a red signal at the west end of Plain when they emerged from Tunnel 2. The engineer put the train in emergency and toned the dispatcher. It appears it was an issue with PTC/CTC. Both ends of Plain were showing as "out of correspondence". The train recovered its air and continue east. While it did technically run through the red signal, there was zero advanced warning that the signal would be red, and the crew responded as best they could, acting in exactly the correct manner.

After meeting the Rocky Mountaineer at Cliff, this eastbound BNSF Provo-Denver is back on the move and crossing South Boulder Creek just west of Tunnel 29. It is a perfect Spring morning for a little chasing in the Colorado High Country! We are right around 8,000 feet above sea level here.

Not too far east of the east switch of Barr, BNSF's Brush Sub traces the western edge of man-made Barr Lake. Passing by the lake is a pair of GEs leading BNSF's Lincoln, NE to Denver, CO manifest. The two units have just under 60 cars in tow.

A train made up of short covered hoppers sits tied down in the siding at Barr. The "special" unit train was delivered to the BNSF by Canadian National in Enola, IL. It is currently awaiting a recrew to take the train to Ft Collins, its final destination (at least on BNSF).
