A trio of GEs, an ES44AC, an AC4400CW, and a ET44AC, lead an eastbound loaded oil train away from the steep grades of the Rockies and towards a clear (green) signal at the west switch of Leyden.

Earlier in the day, this westbound oil empty stalled out on the climb out of Rocky. It only had two units on the head end at that point. A new crew brought UP 8547 out of North Yard for the journey west. Unfortunately, that alone is not enough to take care of the problem. The crew reported the (now) second unit is leaking air so badly, the train cannot be taken out of emergency. The crew spoke to the dispatcher and requested a bypass hose. A hose will be brought out of North Yard to connect to the air hose on the back of UP 8547 and the back of the third unit, completely bypassing the second unit. It will be isolated and, hopefully, the train can then proceed west.

A new crew is slowly backing UP 8547 on to UP 6413 near the west end of Leyden. Though out of sight, the conductor is on the ladder on the opposite side of UP 8547, using hand signals to instruct the engineer on how close they are to connecting with UP 6413.

Just west of the west end of Leyden, UP 8547 has a restricting signal to back in to the siding at Leyden, on the front end of this unit oil train. The restricting signal is displaying as a red over flashing red.

A single C44ACM bring up the tail end of UP's MGJNY-04. The end of the train is rolling by Oberon Lake #1. UP 6449 is one of many recent UP rebuilds. UP has been rebuilding AC4400CW, upgrading certain systems. The rebuilt units are designated as C44ACM by UP.

Although this might appear to be an eastbound coal train, it is in fact a manifest, UP's MGJNY. Not too far out of view in the distance is a string of general manifest cars (box cars, tank cars, etc). The train is parallel is Oberon Road and is crossing 66th Avenue.

Two AC4400CWs (both ex-Espee, SP 246 and SP 324), an ES44AC, and an SD70ACe lead UP's thrice weekly manifest between Grand Junction and Denver. This is the MGJNY-04. Rail traffic between Salt Lake City and Denver has, since 2018, traveled through Wyoming on the Overland Route rather than the former Grande. UP has not (regularly scheduled) manifests between Grand Junction, CO and Helper, UT.

A former Espee AC4400CW (SP 246) is leading the only UP manifest that still runs on the Moffat, the thrice-weekly Grand Junction, CO to North Yard, CO. The train is parallel to Oberon Road, just out of view to the left. It make not appear to be a manifest, based on the coal visible in the shot, but the MGJNY frequently hauls coal ahead of the general manifest cars.

UP's eastbound MGJNY crosses the 72nd Avenue grade crossing in the middle of Arvada. This grade crossing will disappear in the next five years (give or take) as the City of Arvada is widening 72nd Avenue here from two lanes to four lanes. As part of that process, the road will be lowered underneath the tracks.

This westbound oil train stalled out on the climb to Big Ten west of Rocky. The train backed down here and went into emergency. The crew found that the lead unit is severely leaking air. The crew has been instructed to tie the train down and a new crew will bring a new unit out from North Yard later in the day.

UP's manifest from North Yard to Green River, WY sits at the north end of Track 8 in North Yard. After the westbound Zephyr passes by, the train will head for the Belt Industrial Lead, and on to the Greeley Sub. The train will have to "double over", meaning it will pick up the second half of its train from a different track. The train will be 8,100 feet long when it finally departs. To the left, we see a long line of trailers waiting to either be loaded on to trains, or picked up by trucks, at BNSF's Rennicks intermodal facility.

A pair of UP AC4400CWs are the bookends to a BNSF C44-9W. The Dash-9 is sporting the Heritage paint scheme. The units are on the UP's MNYGR (Manifest, North Yard, CO to Green River, WY). Some crew members talk on the ground. the train is waiting for the westbound Zephyr to pass by before heading for the Belt Line. The lead unit, UP 6189, was originally SP 146!

North Yard is pretty quiet on Independence Day 2024. A pair of SD40-2s wait for their next assignment. Three units wait for their turn to be serviced, while a string of other units are currently on the track being serviced.
