Even though the leasing craze that struck a few years ago has largely passed, it does not mean all leasers are gone! Case in point are the two Citi Rail ES44ACs on this BNSF unit sand train.

BNSF is sending a sand train west to the facility in Wellington, UT. The trains are heavy and extremely slow going. This particular train would stall out west of Plain!

After a tremendous amount of precipitation this winter and spring, vegetation is coming up nice and green in Barbara's Gulch. A pair of ES44ACs bring up the tail end of a westbound unit oil empty.

On a beautiful May afternoon, a leased ES44AC and a BNSF ES44AC bring up the tail end of a westbound unit oil empty train through the west end of Barbara's Gulch.

A westbound empty BNSF oil train makes its way through Barbara's Gulch. It is a little unusual to see a unit with only a single unit on the point, particularly on the Moffat. There are, however, two units on the tail end.

A trio of GEs lead a westbound Denver-Provo very slowly out of Leyden. The train is running on yellow signals, following a UP coal empty that will be taking the siding at Rocky to troubleshoot some power issues.

I always enjoy the symmetry that a telephoto shot of a unit train provides. Case-in-point is this unit tank train, which is headed for a transload facility near Price, UT.

BNSF 8496 and BNSF 9052, both SD70ACes, lead a westbound oil train near Welton Reservoir in Arvada. The train has a buffer car at the front and at the end. Buffer cars, frequently hoppers, are appropriately named they are used to provide a buffer between the power (and the crew) and the typically hazardous cargo.

A empty oil train, which will likely be loaded at Wash near Price, UT, heads west out of Leyden. The train has a pair of SD70ACes for power. Nice site in this day when GE dominates, particularly on BNSF.

This scene might look mighty dangerous at first glance, but in reality it is not. The Golden Switch is making a reverse move (away from the grade crossing) to spot a string of cars. The train just clear the crossing and the conductor waves cars across.

The Golden Switch pulls in to the upper yard in Golden with a string of cars. Once the train clears the grade crossing, the train will make a reverse move to spot the cars on another track. In another week, shots of the switch at the end of the day will likely not be possible as the sun will already be set with the end of Daylight Savings Time.

Generally speaking, the Golden Switch typically has a pair of six-axle units as it does its work throughout the day. However, on this particular Thursday, the switch has a GP39-2 along with an SD40-2. The train is crossing 44th Avenue (which will turn in to 10th Street a few blocks to the east) in Golden.

This is a scene that has changed rather drastically over the course of the previous five years. Back in 2013, you would not have seen any houses in the shot. Now, however, the Arvada neighborhood of Leyden Rock has hundreds of houses on the south side of the tracks. A C44-9W leads an eastbound BNSF manifest on clear signals by the new neighborhood.

An eastbound BNSF manifest, totalling less than 30 cars, rolls east on the main just west of Leyden, parallel to CO-72. Interestingly, the train wound up with five units despite the relatively short train.
