Construction continues on the Gross Dam project. The project will ultimately raise the dam by 131 feet, tripling the capacity of the water in the reservoir. As you can see, the dam is being reinforced by thickening the front of the dam. Once the reinforcements has risen to the height of the existing dam, it will continue to build upward.

Although there are no trains in the shot, Gross Reservoir is a landmark that few people on the California Zephyr miss when rolling through Crescent. A massive, roughly five year project is underway right now to raise the dam by 131 feet. That increase will increase the capacity of reservoir by nearly 200%! The reservoir currently has a capacity of 13.6 billion gallons. That will increase to 38.7 billion gallons once the project is finished. As you can see, reinforcements to the front of the dam have started and is slowly climbing the dam.

While there is no train in the shot, I thought I'd include this shot of Gross Reservoir to show the progress being made on the raising of the reservoir. The height of the dam is increasing by 131 feet, which will increase the capacity roughly three times over! The project still has a couple years remaining.

I realize there is no train to be found in this shot, but I just couldn't help but post this anyway! As I was waiting for the westbound Zephyr, I noticed this Bald Eagle sitting on a rock near Welton Reservoir. I had to shoot through a chainlink fence which is why there is some way out of focus lines through the image. When I got out of the car to shoot over the fence, the eagle flew off.

Built in 1927, the Patron Tequila was original the Gulf, Mobile & Ohio car 50. In 1992, it was sold to gentleman named John Paul DeJoria, who ultimately refurbished it and turned it in to the car you see now in 2015.

While there is no train in this shot, I felt compelled to add it to the gallery! I couldn't get any shots of the Ski Train on this day due to the high wind blowing the fresh powder around. So, I settled for this image of the snow blowing amongst the houses in western Arvada.

True, there is no train in this image, but it shows why I couldn't get a shot of the Ski Train on this day. Take six inches of freshly fallen (powder) snow and add 30 MPH winds and this is the result! This image is near the intersection of 78th Drive and Ulysses Street in western Arvada.
