On the climb to Big Ten, the Zephyr, with a standard winter consist, is on the move. After running around a train at Leyden and a train at Rocky, the Zephyr has clear (green) signals up the hill to and beyond the Moffat Tunnel.

At the west end of Rocky, the morning Zephyr is running right on time and, thanks to some good dispatching, the Zephyr ran around a BNSF manifest that has only been sitting in the siding for about 7 minutes! Once the Zephyr is a block ahead, the manifest will get a light to continue.

The two most common units you'll find on BNSF trains on the Moffat are ES44ACs and SD70ACes. This is an example of the latter. The orange is a bit darker than on the ES44ACs that it is stuck in between.

At the east end of Rocky, there is a Diverging Approach (red over yellow) signal for a westbound BNSF Denver-Provo. Note the switch bent for the siding. The train will hold in the siding to allow the Zephyr to run around it.

The two P42DCs leading the eastbound Zephyr have variants on their paint schemes. Well, the schemes themselves are the same (Amtrak's Phase V), but the shade of blue appears quite different. It could simply be a matter of how dirty AMTK 194 is. Of interest, there is a private car behind the power and ahead of the baggage car. This is somewhat unusual as private cars on the Zephyr are typically on the tail end of the train.

Just east of Rocky, UP's Moffat Tunnel Sub enters in to the very narrow passage of Barbara's Gulch and passes underneath CO-93. The gulch is lined with some deciduous trees, making for a rather interesting geological feature.

DPUs have become extremely ubiquitous in the past 15-20 years, and the sole DPU bringing up the tail end of this eastbound UP manifest is no exception. The train originated in Grand Junction and will terminate at North Yard in Denver.

The morning Zephyr passes by the switch that used to allow access to Chem Spur. The spur hasn't been used in close to a decade, and in 2017, UP removed the frog for this turnout. It allows for a smoother, safer ride for any train crossing over it. Such as the passengers riding on the Zephyr here.

Chem spur has not been used in nearly a decade, ever since Mesa Oil moved to a new location in Denver. To smooth out the ride and reduce the risk of a derailment, UP removed the frog from the turnout in 2017. As you can clearly see, the remainder of the spur is not entirely inaccessible by rail.

For many decades, there was a small industry (most recently named Mesa Oil) off the Moffat Main at Chem Spur. Mesa Oil moved nearly a decade ago, leaving the spur with no purpose. In 2017, UP has removed the frog at the turnout, making the spur now impossible to access.
