Two Patrick Henry private cars, the Evelyn A. Henry and the Warren R. Henry bring up the tail end of the Zephyr around Big Ten Curve. These two private cars have actually been sitting at Denver Union Station for over a week. Today, apparently, it is time for them to hit the road again.

AMTK 158 and AMTK 146 lead the westbound Zephyr, elephant-style, up around Big Ten Curve, passing by the open hoppers that have now sat still and silent for over 50 years, serving their job as a wind break.

Two Patrick Henry private cars are catching a ride on the back of the westbound Zephyr as the train passes by a clear (green) signal at the west end of Rocky. Seven Superliners have become the norm on the Zephyr, at least for the time being, in the post-COVID era.

The westbound Zephyr is wrapping its way around Little Ten Curve on the main at Rocky. They are approaching a clear (green) signal at the west end. You may notice there are two private cars in tow on the Zephyr this morning.

The westbound Zephyr crosses over Wadsworth Blvd in the heart of the Denver suburb of Arvada. There are actually two bridges crossing Wadsworth here. Wadsworth here was originally four lanes. A project to widen the road to six lanes in 1995 required a new bridge be built for a shoofly for the tracks. Afterward, the old bridge was torn down and a second bridge was built. Once complete, the shoofly was removed. Now, nearly 30 years later, the second bridge remains. Unused.

The skyline of downtown Denver stands tall in the distance, an afternoon thunderstorm having just dumped some rain on the city. Meanwhile, UP 8099 brings up the tail end of an eastbound UP manifest on it way in to North Yard.

After knocking down a clear (green) signal at the west end of Leyden, this eastbound UP manifest is continuing on the final 10 or so miles on its journey in to North Yard. The train crosses Indiana Street, currently two lanes. There are plans to expand this stretch of Indiana Street to four lanes, but the bridge the track run on would have to be rebuilt to accommodate the additional lanes. Currently, there is no funding for the project.

The eastbound MGJNY rolls away from the camera, a single ES44AH bringing up the rear. A decent thunderstorm has formed and is pouring raining to the north and east of downtown Denver in the distance.

A single ES44AH brings up the tail end of UP's thrice weekly MGJNY. This manifest between North Yard, CO and Grand Junction, CO (and back) is the only regularly scheduled UP manifest that runs on the Moffat. Some afternoon thunderstorms are building and rain to the east is starting to fall.

An ES44DC, an SD70M, and an AC4400CW lead the eastbound MGJNY-08 toward Leyden. Great to see the train in the afternoon as it typically arrives in Denver at or before dawn. Afternoon clouds are building!

The westbound Zephyr just crossed the (relatively new) fill just west of Tunnel 2, has passed through the cut between Tunnel 2 and 3, and the head end is about to disappear in to Tunnel 3. It is rather remarkable just how narrow a shelf the tracks are built on in places through the Tunnel District.

A single BNSF ES44C4 brings up the tail end of an eastbound UP oil train. This ES44C4 is a "Tier 4 Credit" locomotive. After the Tier 4 emissions standards went in to effect, railroads had some carbon credits built up and could use those as credit again Tier 3 locomotives.

The head end of this eastbound oil train is about to cross Church Ditch on its way east to east of Leyden. The leading unit has fallen victim to some pretty severe tagging (graffiti), suggesting that there is a good chance this unit has spent quite a bit of time in some place like LA or Houston.
