The scene around the Blue Mountain Road Crossing is summarized in a single word: GREEN! The Rocky Mountaineer is passing through the beautiful, lush scene, brought on thanks to huge levels of rainfall this May. As of this picture, this May has seen nearly 6 inches of rain the Denver area...the fourth wettest May on record.

The month of May is one of the best for getting outside and getting pictures along the Front Range. It is the one month when things tend to be lush and green. This morning is no exception as a refurbished P40DC leads a seven car Zephyr westbound.

After a few days of extreme haze due to smoke blowing down to Colorado from forest fires in Canada, things are slightly less hazy this morning as the Zephyr, running about 25 minutes late, heads west out of Leyden with the Denver skyline in the distance.

Weather-wise, it is a perfect day in the Denver-Metro area. The apparently haze is not weather related (per se), but rather smoke from numerous wildfires burning far to the north in Canada. The jet stream is currently bringing the smoke down to Colorado as this BNSF Denver-Provo makes its way up and around Big Ten Loop.

A westbound BNSF moves slowly through the siding at Rocky, passing by a track tamper that is holding on the main track. UP is currently adding new ballast in the area, and maintenance is out to work on it as time permits between trains. Note the fourth unit, a GP39-3, rebuilt from a Santa Fe GP39.

This westbound BNSF Denver-Provo has to run in and out of the siding at Leyden in order to get around some maintenance equipment that was holding the main. Indeed, you can see some of the maintenance in the distance. The train is crossing over Indiana Street on a bridge the city of Arvada is hoping to replace in order to widen Indiana Street from two to four lanes.

Winter runoff and a very wet 10 days or so in May has resulted in a very green Front Range! A wonderful time to get shots of trains like this westbound Zephyr. 10 to 11 months out of the year will find areas like this far more brown than green.
