Despite how it might appear, this is actually not a meet between a westbound oil train and an eastbound BNSF manifest. Both of these trains are actually eastbound. The oil train has slow-rolled on the main at Plain, allowing the BNSF manifest to catch up to it on the siding.

A pair of UP GEs leads an eastbound loaded oil train out of Plain, through the S-Curves, and toward the west portal of Tunnel 1. The lead AC4400CW has a rather faded paint scheme!

This UP oil train is departing Plain on an advanced approach (flashing yellow) signal. Dispatch has informed the train that they will meet the westbound Zephyr at Eisele (Clay) and dispatch is setting up the west switch for the oil train to hold the main. If you look in the distance, you'll notice take cars coming out of Tunnel 4. That is actually a second eastbound train. Specifically, BNSF's HPVODEN (Provo-Denver).

The near-record levels of rain this May has resulted in some rich, lush, green scenes all throughout the Denver area. Passengers riding on an on-time Zephyr are enjoying the views as the train emerges from Tunnel 1 and approaches the east switch of Plain.

AMTK 27 and AMTK 33, elephant-style, lead the westbound Zephyr out of the west portal of Tunnel 1. The summer is a great time for this shot when the Zephyr is on time and the sun is nearly far enough to the north to offer a little light on the nose of the Zephyr.

Hello headlights! The characteristic configuration of headlights on a P42DC indicate that the westbound Zephyr is about to pop out of the west portal of Tunnel 1.

After meeting the eastbound Rocky Mountaineer and eastbound California Zephyr at Leyden, a trio of SD70ACes throttle up, kicking up a bit of exhaust, as the train accelerates while crossing over Indiana Street.

This is just about the best lighting you could ask for! We are full on in the Golden Hour as this westbound BNSF manifest pulls on to the main, out of the siding at Leyden. Intense afternoon thunderstorms create an extremely dark eastern sky, adding the the color and contrast of the scene.

The eastbound Zephyr has sped up to track speed and is meeting a westbound BNSF manifest (the Denver-Provo) at Leyden. Two private cars bring up the tail end of Amtrak, almost disguising the train true identity.

A bit of sunshine breaks through the mostly cloudy skies to the west as the eastbound Zephyr approaches a clear (green) signal at the west end of Rocky. The dome car, now the Charter Club, was originally UP 7003. The open ended car bringing up the rear is the St James Place.

The eastbound Zephyr has just passed by the open hoppers that have been on Big Ten Loop for around 52 years. The train slowly descends down the 1.7% grade, taking the tracks down the final bit of elevation to the relatively flat plains.

Heading in to Big Ten Loop, passengers riding in these two privately owned "Charter" cars enjoy some of their final elevated views of the plains. In a matter of minutes, the Zephyr will be leaving the curves of the Rockies behind, and head out on to the plains.

The engineer on the eastbound Zephyr offer a friendly wave as the train departs from the east end of Eisele (Clay). The train will now wrap roughly 270° as it comes around Big Ten Loop and descends down in to Rocky.
