A pair of ES44ACs, one Canadian Pacific and one BNSF, bring up the rear of BNSF's Provo to Denver manifest, currently tied down in the siding at Rocky. The train is actually quite short, at only 3,100 feet in the length, meaning the back half of the train is not wrapped around Little Ten Curve.

It was a nice surprise to find this Canadian Pacific ES44AC as one of two DPUs on the tail end of BNSF's Provo-Denver. Not that we see CP units in Denver particularly often, but knowing the lifespan of this paint scheme is officially limited with the creation of CPKC, it's always good to get some shots.

Last night at around 11:30pm, this BNSF Provo-Denver manifest showed up here at Rocky and tied down in the siding. 10 hours later and a relief crew has not yet show up to take the train the remainder of the way in to town. The train is actually quite short, too, compared to the average manifest BNSF runs on the Moffat.

As someone that was raised on Rio Grande in the 1980s, spartan cab EMD units hold a special place for me. So, I love getting shots of the Rocky Mountaineer which, when not borrowing UP SD70Ms, runs with EMD spartan cab units. Here, RMRX 8600 knocks down the signal at east Eisele (Clay). The train just completed a slow order and is throttling up to accelerate back up to track speed.

RMRX 8600, the leased SD40M-2 from Horizon Rail, and a standard Mountaineer GP40-3 lead the westbound Rocky Mountaineer. Unlike on the Zephyr, passengers on the Mountaineer are allowed to open the vestibule windows and enjoy some fresh air.

Two Rocky Mountaineer crewmembers are on the ground, trying to find an air leak. The engineer noticed the leak in the cab and the crew are now literally listening to see if they can hear where the leak is coming from. Within about 10 minutes, the leak will be found and sealed, and the train will continue west.

Right at the switch where the Rocky Flat Industrial Lead leaves the mainline at Rocky, the Rocky Mountaineer has rolled to a stop. There is an air issue and the crew is stopping to investigate. This lead unit, RMRX 8600, has an SD45 car body, but it an SD40-2 internally. The unit is on a long term lease from Horizon Rail Leasing. It will act as a substitute when one of the GP40-3s is having mechanical issues, such as today. The Mountaineer is doing this rather than leasing SD70Ms from UP.

Passengers riding the two Patrick Henry cars on the back of the Zephyr, along with all the passengers on the Zephyr itself, have just passed through the first of many tunnels the train will pass through between Denver and Glenwood Springs.

It is a crystal clear morning as the standard pair of P42DCs lead the westbound Zephyr toward the east portal of Tunnel 1. This location is a pretty common spot for pictures of the morning Zephyr. Largely because it is one place where you can get fantastic lighting on the train in the morning.

Both the Evelyn A. Henry and Warren R. Henry are on the back of the California Zephyr this morning after having been picked up at Denver Union Station. The cars just came through on the westbound Zephyr a three months ago in June, but after a bit of additional traveling around, they are here once again!

AMTK 187 and AMTK 13 lead the westbound Zephyr around the eastern edge of Big Ten Curve. On the back of the train, both the Evelyn A. Henry and Warren R. Henry are catching a ride. The Zephyr is running a bit late this morning. The Rocky Mountaineer actually departed Denver first, but held up at Arvada to let the Zephyr by first.

The westbound Zephyr has a couple of private cars catching a ride on the tail end. The cars spent a couple of days in Denver, but are now ready to continue west to Emeryville. The cars are both Patrick Henry cars.

The two SD70ACes that are trailing on this oil train look a bit dirty on their engineers side, but they are significantly dirtier on the other side! They, along with ES44AC UP 7873 have the duty of taking this empty train to Wash, UT for loading.

It is quite impressive watching the energy transition from coal to oil on the Moffat. 20 years ago, the Moffat saw as many as 16-18 coal trains in a 24 hour period. While oil trains have not (yet) become that common, their presence is absolutely increasing. Two years ago, there might be one UP oil train ever two days. Now, there seems to be an average of at least three oil trains every 24 hours. The train pictured is no exception, three UP units leading the train west at Blue Mountain Drive.

UP 7873 leads a westbound oil train around the bend from Eisele (Clay) and toward the grade crossing at Blue Mountain Drive. Off in the distance, the skyline of Denver stands amidst a sea of trees that, within the next 2 to 4 weeks should turn to fire with fall colors.
