Looking down on the east switch of Rocky, you can see this track gang working to replace some old ties by sliding new ties underneath the rails. Sometimes, it take a little effort, and the bulldozer has to move the tied back and forth, almost hammering it underneath. Looks like the radio channel sign, which changes from 54/54 to 23/23 for westbound trains here are Rocky, is laying on the ground to the side of the rails.

This bulldozer is equipped with a tool that allows it to get a good grip on ties and literally pull them out from underneath the rails! The crews remove the spikes and tie plates, and then slide them right out.

A Norfolk Southern AC44C6M is the sole DPU on this eastbound BNSF coal empty. The unit is being power-shared with BNSF. This is a common practice, particularly for Class 1 railroads, to loan units to other railroads for any number of reasons.

A Valmy coal empty, with a BNSF SD70ACe and an MRL SD70ACe, passes by an advanced approach (flashing yellow) signal at East Leyden. From Denver, the train will continue on BNSF rails to the Powder River Basin where it will be loaded once again.

In advance of Independence Day in the United States, the Rocky Mountaineer has added four American flags tot he cab of RMRX 8020. This train will ultimately return to town in two days, on the 4th of July. The train is passing through a 40 MPH slow order here at the east switch of Leyden.

In true Rocky Mountaineer fashion, the two GP40-3s kick up a lot of exhaust as the units throttle up, just west of the grade crossing at Simms Street.

Shortly after the westbound Zephyr came through, DS-378 has upgraded the signal at East Leyden from a stop (red) signal, to an approach (yellow) signal. This is in advance of the westbound Rocky Mountaineer, now just two blocks away to the east. If you look closely, you can see that, like so many industrial lights these days, the signal lights are LED.

AMTK 154 is the newest Phase 7 unit that I have personally seen. Amtrak is slowly repainting their entire fleet of P42DCs. I do not know at what pace Amtrak is repainting the units, but if they are repainting them at an average of one a week, it'll take a little under four years for them all to be repainted. Regardless of the time, the Phase 5 scheme will be disappearing, so get your shots while you can! AMTK 22 is still in Phase 5b paint as the westbound Zephyr passes by on the main at Leyden.

There are days...or perhaps certain times on any given day...in which you might think the Moffat is actually owned by BNSF rather than Union Pacific. An empty oil train heads west on the main track at Eisele (Clay) in the background, while an eastbound coal empty sits in the siding at Rocky. The eastbound is waiting on the Zephyr and the Rocky Mountaineer before it will be its turn to continue east. The crew only has until 11:15am to work before their hours are up.

NS 4130 is actually no stranger to the Moffat. Lately, NS 4130 has been sticking around in Denver and BNSF has been putting it to good use on several trains. Here, the unit is on the point of a westbound oil train, coming around Big Ten Curve.

NS 4130 leads an empty oil train around Big Ten Curve. It is very interesting how oil has rapidly replaced coal as the most common type of train that runs on the Moffat now. Granted, they do not run with the frequency the coal trains once did, but their counts do seem to be increasing.

Another BNSF oil empty that originated on Norfolk Southern east of the Mississippi. This is why so many NS units are showing up on the Moffat lately. The four additional BNSF units were added to the train in Denver. Once loaded, the train will likely return east over the Moffat in a 3x3 configuration.
