At the Belt Line Connection, this manifest makes the turn from the Belt Line to the Greeley Sub. The train is the daily MNYGR, running from North Yard to Green River, WY. Many of the cars will then be forwarded on to Salt Lake City. The train is about to pass by the Suncor oil refinery in Commerce City as it approach Sand Creek Jct.

This southbound intermodal train is passing underneath I-270 and crossing over BNSF's Brush Sub at Sand Creek Jct. Indeed, the train is crossing the junction's namesake, Sand Creek, on its way south. The train is actually quite short, as you can clearly see the end of the train on the right side of the frame.

A southbound UP intermodal train approaches the diamond that crosses BNSF's Brush Sub at Sand Creek. An ET44AC and an AC4400CW are power for this relatively short train. There are plenty of puddles in the area after several inches of rail fell through the area the night before.

UP 5872 has recently been rebuilt by UP from an C44AC-CTE to a C44ACM (UP's designation). In the world of expensive Tier-4 compliant units from EMD and GE (Wabtec), most railroads are starting to focus money on rebuilds rather than new planes. After the rebuild, UP 5872 also got the latest UP paint scheme, moving the American flag from the long hood to the nose, and removing the wings from the front of the nose entirely.

Just south of Rolla, a northbound UP manifest approaches the grade crossing at 96th Avenue. It appears that the yard crew at North Yard blocked the train quite nicely for its trip to Green River, WY. There, the train will likely be broken up (to some extent) before cars continue on to their final destinations.

The long days of summer are great for having plenty of daylight to try to find trains, but the sun resting almost directly straight up in the sky results in short shadows. Black and white, with a bit of a contrast bump, actually can be quite helpful. Note the Denver skyline in the distance and the Rocky Mountains even further off in the distance as a northbound UP manifest approaches.

BNSF's Denver, CO to Lincoln, NE manifest has just cleared the west switch of Irondale. The headlights on the Chicago, IL to Denver, CO Z-train are back on bright, ready to roll west the rest of the way in to the yard.

BNSF 4135, A Heritage 2 painted C44-9W lead five additional GE units in to the siding at Irondale with a Lincoln-bound manifest. The train is meeting BNSF's Chicago to Denver Z-train, which is holding the main. The manifest had an issue with its wheel count, and will meet the train master at the east end of Irondale.

An eastbound BNSF manifest rolls along Colorado Highway 2 between Sand Creek and Irondale. The train just departed the yard and is on its way to Lincoln, NE. The skyline of Denver stands tall, set against the background of the Colorado Rockies.

You can see that the switch is bent and aligned in to the siding of Irondale at the west switch. It might appear that the signal is displaying a red over dark aspect, but it is actually red over flashing red...the shot is just in the middle of the flash. This is a restricting indication as the siding of Irondale does not have any occupancy.

Two ES44ACs lead a westbound Z-train on the main at Irondale. There are two more units DPU'd on the tail end of the train. This hot train has a lot of JB Hunt, Amazon Prime, and FedEx containers.

BNSF's Chicago to Denver Z-train is holding up on the main at Irondale, the first siding east of Denver. There currently is no route for the train to get through the yard to Rennicks, so it has to hold here for one eastbound manifest.

A trio of C44s leads a northbound UP manifest off the Inbound track and across Sand Creek at Sand Creek Jct. The train is passing through Suncor's oil refinery in Commerce City and is about to cross the BNSF Brush Sub. The line was built in to Denver by the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy, reaching Denver in 1882. The line would become Burlington Northern's in 1971 after its creation (and absorption of the CB&Q), and finally BNSF in 1995.

It is hard to believe, but it has been five years (almost to the day) since UP ran a regular freight over the Moffat between Denver and Salt Lake City. The final MRONY (Manifest, Roper, UT to North Yard, CO) ran on December 8, 2018. Any freight traffic running from Denver to Salt Lake on UP now travels on this train. The MNYGR (Manifest, North Yard, CO to Green River, WY). From there, cars are placed on a new train, the MGRRO (Manifest, Green River, WY to Roper, UT). The train is just getting underway out of Denver, passing through Commerce City and crossing Sand Creek by the Suncor refinery.

Northeast of Denver is the city of Commerce City. It is appropriately named as there is a lot of commerce that that happens here. Just north of Sand Creek Junction, you can see many yard tracks and multiple businesses with customers in need of cars. A southbound UP manifest on the mainline cuts through the scene about 10 minutes prior to sunset.
