The westbound Zephyr approaches the grade crossing at 66th Avenue in Arvada. With the morning Zephyr generally headed away from the sun, this short stretch of track by 66th Avenue is one of the best places for a reasonably lit (not backlit) shot as the tracks run (more or less) geographically north here.

Crossing 66th Avenue, the westbound Zephyr is running right on time as it navigates its way through the residential Denver suburb of Arvada. Arvada has a few areas of commercial zoning, but the vast majority of the city of 120,000 citizens is filled with houses.

A pair of P42DCs (both in Phase 5) are power on a typical Zephyr consist this morning as the train passes by Oberon Lake #1 in Arvada. The Zephyr is roughly halfway between the control point at Arvada (CP DS007) and the east switch of Leyden (CP DS012).

Moffat Tunnel (UP) Rocky Mountaineer
After a couple weeks off, the Rocky Mountaineer is running again, heading west underneath the Sheridan Blvd overpass on the eastern edge of Arvada. The GP40-3s are back on the train, although they are certainly kicking up quite a bit of exhaust as they head west on Main 1. Other tracks in the shot include Main 2, the Arvada siding, and BNSF's Golden Sub on the far right.

RMRX 8021 and RMRX 8020 lead the Rocky Mountaineer west on Main 1, getting ready to pass underneath the RTD Commuter Rail Gold Line. 20 years ago, only two tracks were in this shot. UP's Moffat Tunnel main and BNSF's Golden branch line. Today, seven tracks are in the shot, including the commuter tracks.

Yard Shots Union Pacific
Sitting on the ready tracks at North Yard, UP 1943 looks pretty great in the morning light. The unit has spent a lot of time leading oil trains between Wash, UT and destination to the east. However, rumor has it that its 92-day inspection is due. Since that can no longer be conducted in Denver, the unit will likely go to North Platte, NE on the MNYNP. From there? Who can say...

Yard Shots Union Pacific
In the late 90s, Union Pacific really wanted units with more horsepower. EMD and GE both obliged with their own attempts at a 6000 HP unit. GEs was designed an AC6000CW. UP 6894 was delivered to UP as UP 7006, one of the original GE AC6000CW. The 6000 HP units were plagued with issues, and the attempts were eventually ditched. Today, UP 6894 has been rebuilt (internally) with a 4400 HP prime mover and is designated as a C44ACM.

At the Belt Line Connection, this manifest makes the turn from the Belt Line to the Greeley Sub. The train is the daily MNYGR, running from North Yard to Green River, WY. Many of the cars will then be forwarded on to Salt Lake City. The train is about to pass by the Suncor oil refinery in Commerce City as it approach Sand Creek Jct.

A UP manifest, with a very long string of covered hoppers, passes a diverging clear signal at Sand Creek (CP W005), moving from the Inbound Lead to the main track. The train was assembled in North Yard and will head north on the Greeley Sub to Speer, WY before turning west to head to Green River, WY.

A trio of elephant-style units provide the sole power on a long manifest that consists mainly of covered hoppers. No DPUs on the train today, suggesting the train probably consists of empties more so than loads. The train is passing through the Suncor oil refinery on its way north on the Greeley sub.

UP 6230 leads an ES44AC and an SD70ACe across the diamond at Sand Creek as it crosses over the diamonds namesake (Sand Creek). UP 6230 was delivered in May 1995 as SP 150. The train is also passing by the Suncor oil refineries. There are technically two refineries on the property, capable of processing close to 100,000 barrels of oil each day.
