Moffat Tunnel (UP) Ski Train
On a lazy, hazy, summer morning, the Ski Train passes west through Crescent on its way west to Winter Park. The experience on the train in the summer is completely different from winter. Many of the passenger in the summer are on board just for the experience of riding the train!

SKTX 283 leads the Ski Train west past the grade crossing at Crescent. Note a couple of the vestibule windows appear to be open...looks like some people are probably preparing for a shot of Gross reservoir, just around the bend!

Taking the siding at Crescent to await an eastbound coal load, the MNYGJX-06 crosses the grade crossing as the train it is meeting is (literally) just around the corner.

UP did a wonderful job getting this passenger special into and out of Denver in a very timely fashion! The train was east of Denver on the KP at 3:45pm and by 4:45pm, it was going through Clay! Here, just before the last bit of sun disappears to shadow west Crescent, the special rounds the sweeping curve near the west end of the block.

UP ran a passenger special over the KP line and west on the Moffat on March 7. The train consisted of eight cars and was led by a single SD70M. Dick Davidson (who will be retiring soon) was onboard for the trip westward.

Elephant-style GE AC's lead up this westbound coal empty at the west switch of Crescent. Unpatched SP units are becoming more and more difficult to find! In the background, Gross Dam stops the waters South Boulder Creek in Gross Reservoir, which is finally full after a few years of drought.

UP SD70M (Phase II) #3843 is a great leader on the MRONY-19 with wings and a clean flag! The train has 12,800 horses (two DC-powered, and one AC-powered) on the ~5,000 foot manifest. Another year or two and those trees will (unfortunately) obscure the view of the mainline.

Recently Union Pacific reinstated the MNYRO/MRONY between North Yard and Roper. It looks like this move is justified too as UP 3843 heads up three units on a ~5,000 foot MRONY-19 through Crescent. The MRONY has been affectionately referred to as the "Macaroni".

The specially chartered Ski Train just left the siding of Crescent. Because this train has been chartered, it is heading westbound in the evening. This makes for some outstanding pictures because the train is typically heading away from the sun during its normal runs.
