It is pretty rare these days to catch a UP train on the Joint Line. Other than the almost-daily MNYPU and MPUNY manifest trains that run between North Yard and Pueblo, there isn't usually much Armour Yellow to be found. The MNYPU and MPUNY typically run overnight. However, I got a tip that a loaded coal train was making a daytime appearance! So, we start here at Walnut Street in Denver as the train approaches a clear signal at Walnut Street on Main 1.

It is not always apparent from the ground, but the blades for wind turbines have a pretty significant curve to them! Each blade actually spans two flat cars. From top to bottom, the tracks here are the North Yard Siding, Main 3, Bypass 2, and Bypass 1.

As the head end of the morning westbound Zephyr knocks down an approach signal at Pecos Crossover, the tail end of the Zephyr just passed by the old water tower, still standing near Utah Junction. To the right, the MNYNP sits on Bypass 2, waiting to come in to the yard. A blade train from Vestas is also waiting for new power to head south on the Joint Line to Texas.

At the beginning of its journey west of Denver, the daily California Zephyr passes underneath the sole-remaining Rio Grande era signal bridge at the west (geographic north) end of North Yard. The train is on the main, running alongside the North Yard siding and the yard lead.

There is barely a cloud in the sky on a July day that saw triple digit heat in the Denver Metro area. The Colorado Springs Utility coal train sits on Yard Track 1, awaiting for a crew. Once it gets a crew, it will depart on the Belt Industrial Lead and head to the Greeley Sub and north to the Powder River Basin.

A pair of SD70ACes lead a Vestas wind train off the Belt Industrial Lead and in to North Yard. The train will actually be turned over to BNSF and will continue south on the Joint Line toward Texas.

The mercury hits triple digits (101°F) on a very hot summer day as a North Yard remote job switches cars in the storage yard. In the background, a train carrying wind nacelles enters in to the yard from the Belt Industrial lead, crossing BNSF's North Main and UP's own Moffat Tunnel Sub Main.

After letting a BNSF baretable train through Utah Junction on the BNSF main, UP DS-86 lined this windmill train in to North Yard off the Belt Industrial Lead. The train loaded at the Vestas Plant in Brighton. The pair of SD70ACes look good on the point!

As the Zephyr pulls out of Denver Union Station to leave the urban setting behind, it passes by the player parking lot of Coors Field, where the Colorado Rockies play when at home. This is a scene that has changed drastically in the last two decades. Most of the buildings visible in the immediate area behind the train did not exist in 2000.

With its station stop at Denver complete, the Zephyr starts to pull away from the station in Lower Downtown Denver (LoDo) on Track 4. The tracks to the left of the train are RTD commuter rail tracks out to Denver International Airport (the A-Line) and the north line (the N-Line). The tracks to the right are RTD commuter rail tracks out to Arvada and Westminster (the B-Line and G-Line).

A look from above the MGJNY as it stops to align some switches in the yard at North Yard. The train is sitting on the North Yard siding, underneath one of the last-remaining Rio Grande signal bridges. If you are wondering why there are only two sets of signals, yet three tracks crossing under the bridge, it is because the track to the right of the train is not signaled. It is the North Yard Lead and the dispatcher cannot see that track on his or her display. Only the track the train is on (the siding) and the track to the left (the main) are visible to the dispatcher.

This shot really shows the interesting layout of the track at Utah Junction. This MGJNY is coming in to the yard from the North Yard siding. Alongside the train is the Moffat mainline that continues down to Fox Jct and Prospect Jct. The Belt Industrial Lead crosses the main and also the BNSF main to the right side of the image.

The eastbound MGJNY passes underneath on of the few-remaining Rio Grande signal bridges to be found in 2020. This is right at Utah Junction and the train is entering in to North Yard off of the North Yard Siding. The overnight trip from Grand Junction is almost complete.

The MGJNY passes by the old water tower on the North Yard Siding, making its final approach in to North Yard. If you follow the train back through the frame, you can see just how far it extends to the west as the train is over 9,100 feet in length today.
