The crew went on duty at 11am, but the train didn't leave Denver until 4:30pm. Now, due to a fair amount of traffic on the Moffat, the train is holding. I like the shot as it nicely compares two CSX paint scheme. The gray scheme on the right had been the norm for many years. On this particularly day, however, a pair of them came in with a train off the Brush Sub. Both units have AC traction motors, as indicated by the lightning bolt beneath the number on the cab. This train just came in off the Brush Sub with a pair of GP39Ms (rebuilt from GP35s) and a pair of CSX AC4400CWs. The cars were dropped in the yard and the power is now headed for the House for fuel. UP power is working on assembling the "Public Service" coal train. One remaining generator at Xcel Energy's Cherokee Power Station in Denver is powered by coal. Two others have already been shut down and replaced by natural gas. The final generator powered by coal will make the switch to natural gas by 2017, according to Xcel. Once that happens, the Cherokee Plant will no longer be a customer of UP, eliminating (roughly) 6-8 coal trains (that counts loads and empties) from the Moffat per week. The train is running on a new track just put in this year (2015) as part of a project to increase the length of BNSF's coal tracks. This signal, once put in service, will dictate train movement into the yard from the main track (or just continuing down the main track). BNSF is sinking some money in the east end of the yard in 2015. The tracks called "Coal 1" and "Coal 2" (where westbound coal train will typically stop to recrew) are being extended. They will be long enough to support 140-car trains when construction is complete. As part of the construction, a new signal bridge has been installed! The train is on Main 2 and approaching a clear signal at C&S Junction. Although it will remain on the same physical train at C&S, it will switch from Main 2 to Main 3 and continue down to Prospect Jct where it will return to BNSF. BNSF usually does a pretty good job of patching units to match their present paint scheme.
