Always nice to see a familiar face in town! Okay, so it may not be obvious at first glance that this is a familiar face. Until September 1, 2005, this was DRGW 3105. It spent nearly five years running as a patched until. However, it recently made a visit to North Little Rock and got truly assimilated by UP!

Although the MNYPU doesn't depart Denver until close to midnight, power for the train has already been spotted on the runaround track at North Yard. A pair of C44AC-CTEs and the Rio Grande Heritage Unit will run the train south.

Denver Union Terminal (RTD) Amtrak
After returning to Denver due to a major rock slide on the Moffat, the westbound Zephyr is going to be turned into the eastbound Zephyr. The spare P42 is taken out of the stub track and added to the front of the train. On the west side of the divide, the eastbound Zephyr was wyed at Tabernash and turned into the westbound Zephyr. Passengers from that train were bussed to Denver and placed on this train to continue east to Chicago. Likewise, passengers from this train were bussed to Fraser and placed on the new westbound Zephyr. When all was said and done, #5 was 10 hours late heading west and #6 was just under 3 hours late heading east.

After leaving Denver and then getting pulled back to Denver, the California Zephyr sits in track 1, the only remaining track at Union Station. The train was pulled back to town by the P42 on the rear end after a derailment on the Moffat.

Well, after traveling almost 30 miles west of Denver, the westbound Zephyr has returned to Denver! A rock slide on the Moffat kept the train from making it west. The head end P42 was pulled off the train at Clay, run around the train, and tacked on the tail end. It then pulled the train back to town.

Time marches forward! In preparation for the major construction project that is up and coming at Union Station, tracks 2 through 5 have been ripped out. Once a temporary depot has been setup for Amtrak, track 1 will be gone too. Once construction is complete in several years, the tracks will be put back in.

While it might look like a GP30, BNSF 2809 has been rebuilt and is now designated as a GP39M. Meanwhile, what's up with the blue and white BNSF unit? This is a former Conrail GP38AC that BNSF has acquired. For the time being, they simply added their logo to the unit until some point in the future when it receives a full repaint. This blue and white scheme has earned these units the nickname "smurfs".

I'm not exactly sure where this Utah Railway GP38-2 (disguised as a GP35) is headed. but it was just hanging out at the BNSF engine shop. It was originally an Espee GP35 that has been rebuilt, and internally it is now a GP38-2.

Nope, I honestly didn't make a quick trip up to Winnipeg in Canada! Canadian Pacific was repaying BNSF some power miles in the form of two SD40-2s and a (SOO) SD60. The train is coming down through Hogan's Alley on Main 1. The tower at Elitch Gardens is visible in the distance.

Here's a pretty rare visitor to Colorado! I have very few shots of any Canadian Pacific units on my website. So the fact that this is a standard cab SD40-2 makes it that much better.

Union Pacific has a few Track Geometry cars that it keeps on its roster. These cars are self-propelled, can go up to 70 MPH, and can record every detail about and defect in the rails as they move along. I happened to come across the car sitting in the storage yard in North Yard on this Saturday afternoon. I came in on the Limon Sub earlier in the day, and should be heading for the Joint Line the next day.

Well, it is official! Pecos street is closed at the tracks (near Utah Junction) and a two-year-long Form B has been put in place on the tracks. A new overpass will be built here over the next 12-18 months, so traffic on Pecos will no longer need to worry about coal trains.

Even though there isn't any evidence of it in this picture, March is the snowiest month of the year in Colorado. Consequently, UP has been keeping this snow bus on hand, just it case it is needed.

If there is a snow storm in the the area that shuts down highways, this snow bus can be used to transport crews.

A GP38-2 and a GP15-1 work on a switching job in the yard. UP 695 is a remote control unit, and the operator is at the back end of the string of cars.
