Near BNSF's engine house, on the Buck lead, an Amtrak special is departing Union Station. An Amtrak Cascades trainset is going to head south on the Joint Line to go to the Transportation Technology Center near Pueblo, CO.

Sitting near the BNSF engine house was this SD75M! SD75s (both SD75Ms and SD75Is) have become exceedingly rare in recent years. BNSF has been keeping most of them in long term storage. Loved catching this one on this Friday morning.

Love that this "yellow bonnet" GP39-2 has been hanging out around Denver lately, and working as a yard job switcher at BNSF's 31st Street Yard.

UP 1616, leading a UP passenger special, sits tied down in the storage yard at North Yard while the morning California Zephyr, running a few minutes late, rolls by on the main track. Wonder how many people on the train took note of the specially painted SD70M?

I wanted to get a close up shot of the nose of UP 1616, making sure to get a close up of the portrait of Abraham Lincoln himself, the 16th President of the United States.

A good side shot of the Abraham Lincoln unit as it sits in Denver in the North Yard storage yard, near the grain elevator. I am not sure what inspired UP to create this unit, honoring the 16th President. Nor am I complaining. It looks great. Just not sure what the motivation was for creating it.

I've been lucky enough to capture some shots of UP 1616 a couple of times now, but this is the first time I've been able to get a shot of it when its nose is not coupled to something else! It is leading a passenger train that is supposedly going to sit here in the North Yard storage yard for a few days before departing. Departing where...unknown at the time of this picture!

After running from Denver to Cheyenne with UP 4014 on the point, completing the 2025 steam excursion, the passenger equipment and UP 1616 (plus UP 4404 added) returned south down the Greeley Sub to Denver with UP 1616 leading! The exact purpose for the trip is not known, but the train is once again being kept in the storage yard. Note the "rent-a-cop" car from a company UP has hired to ensure nothing happens to the train (graffiti, etc).

UP 4014 just crossed over from Main 2 to Main 1 at C&S Junction, and then crossed over Clear Creek, continuing to pull west so the train can clear the OS to get a light to back up east. The Big Boy was steaming really well here, and a bit of smoke was coming up, blocking out a bit of the sun, which in turn highlight the red in the exhaust.

After spending all day yesterday in the storage yard at North Yard, it is now time for this Big Boy excursion to return back to Cheyenne! UP 4014 is putting on a fantastic show in the early morning as it heads west on the Moffat on the North Yard Siding. So yes...Big Boy has officially run on the Moffat Tunnel Sub! But it will only get as far as just west of C&S Junction so it can back down Bypass 2, across the Belt Line, to the Greeley Sub.

A couple folks look on at UP 4014 as it sits on a track in the storage yard at the north end of North Yard. Back when intermodal ran over the Moffat, in the Rio Grande and Southern Pacific days, the track the passenger train is on here was used as an intermodal ramp. Intermodal loaders/unloaders were in the open dirt area, and truck came in to pickup or drop off trailers here.

The sun is just above the horizon, providing some fantastic morning light along the side of UP 4014, the train sitting in the storage yard at North Yard, preparing for a 6:30am departure to head back to Cheyenne.
