Belt Industrial Lead (UP) Union Pacific
UP 9795 crosses over a very low South Platte River, a 5500-foot train in tow. UP 9795 was actually originally delivered to Chicago North Western in April 1994. Within the past few years, UP has started a rebuild program, taking some old DC traction motor units, and rebuilding them as AC traction motor units. This is a perfect example!

After coming off of UP's Greeley Sub, the MGRNY is at the far east end of the 4½ mile Belt Industrial Lead. The train has just passed underneath BNSF's Brush Sub, and is about to pass underneath Brighton Blvd on its journey toward North Yard.

I have wanted to try to get a shot at this location for quite a long time, and was finally able to make it happen. UP 9795 and train are coming off the Greeley Sub, wrapping around the north leg of a wye that leads to the Belt Industrial Lead. You can see the inbound main for the 36th Street Yard in the distance.

AMTK 190 passes underneath one of the only remaining Rio Grande signal bridges still in existence. This is at Utah Junction at the north end of North Yard. The Zephyr is on the main track, the North Yard siding the next track to the right. The next track to the right is actually the North Yard lead, and it is not in CTC limits. This is why there are only two sets of signals on the bridge.

A BNSF yard job, hauling a long string of JB Hunt double stacks, pulls across UP's Belt Line on the Front Range Sub. After crossing through the CTC limits across the diamond, the head end of the yard job is now in Restricted Limits. No track warrant needed for this switching.

Considering how time marches on and things continue to change, I always figure it is a good idea to get shots of some of the Denver rail infrastructure. 20 years from now, this could all be apartments...

This GP40N has a fairly interesting history. It was delivered as a GP40 (not a GP40-2) to Baltimore and Ohio in November 1966 as B&O 3692. It was briefly on the Chessie roster after the B&O and C&O merger, and then wound up on the CSX roster as CSX 6508. CSX then sold the unit to Espee and it changed colors and roster number, becoming SP 7114. Now, it has found new life as it has been rebuilt to GP40-2 specifications, designated as a GP40N.
