The siding of Tabernash is somewhat unusual in that the main and the siding are a considerable distance away from each other for most of the length of the siding. At its further point, the siding is 1/3 of a mile away from the main! This is because, way back in the days of steam, there was a steam engine facility here at Tabernash where helpers were kept and maintain to assist in the climb to the Moffat Tunnel. There is a wye connecting the main and siding, allowing steam engines to be turned around. The Anschutz Ski Train used to use the wye to turn around as well. Here, the westbound Zephyr slowly rolls through the siding (to the right) as UP's MGJNY is tied down on the main track (to the left). If an eastbound needs to tie down at Tabernash, it is common practice to tie down on the mainline rather than the siding because the siding has a grade crossing in the middle of it whereas the main does not.

The siding at Tabernash is a very interesting one. The siding makes a sharp curve to the left (when heading west) and there is a very large separation between siding at main. This is because there is a wye here and, at one point, this where helpers were station to cut in to heavy eastbound trains for the final shove up to the Moffat Tunnel. Today, the Zephyr glides down the main with AMTK 184 on the point.

On a chilly October day (42°F), UP 1988 sits on the point of an eastbound coal load on the main at Tabernash as a few lazy clouds glide across the sky. The train, which loaded at Energy on the Craig Branch, is waiting for the eastbound Zephyr to pass by on the siding before it attempts to charge up the hill to the Moffat Tunnel. The train has been having some DPU issues, so the engineer cannot guarantee they will not stall out.

A look at the harsher side of railroading! The east switch at Tabernash was not locking up on the dispatcher's board, meaning he could not be certain it was properly lined. As a result, the dispatcher was not able to get the Zephyr a light out of Tabernash. The solution was to have the conductor hop off the train with a broom and sweep the snow and ice out of the switch points. Then, manually throw the switch to the siding and back to the main. Meanwhile, the Zephyr got authority from the dispatcher to proceed past the red signal at east Tabernash. Once the lead units are on the switch, the conductor will put the switch back in power and the train will continue east.
