I had originally hoped to head to the high country a week earlier, when more of the trees still had their fall colors. Even though a lot of trees had lost their leaves at this point, I'm not complaining about this shot of an eastbound coal load (with an SD70ACe on the point). The train just popped out of the Moffat Tunnel and will now descend roughly 4,000 feet in the next 45 miles.

The westbound MNYRO knocks down a clear signal at the east end of East Portal. At this point, we are up near 9,000 feet and about a mile away from the eastern bore of the 6.2-mile-long Moffat Tunnel. Another five weeks or so and the aspens in this area will be getting mighty colorful!

The MNYRO is about to cross over South Boulder Creek just east of Tolland. I would have liked this picture a lot more if "Union Pacific" hadn't been scratched off the shield on the nose of this SD70M. The engineer is enjoying the ride, kicking back with a boot out the window!

How nice would this shot have been for an eastbound coming out of the tunnel? Unfortunately, it was a very slow Sunday on the Moffat. The westbound Zephyr just exited the tunnel in Winter Park and the nearest eastbound was still all the way over at Granby, making its way toward Tabernash. Maybe next time...

Cast aside a little ways away from the tracks near the west end of East Portal, I found this milepost 50 sign just laying in the weeds. Apparently Union Pacific will be replacing it with a newer version!

Here is a unit that is no stranger to frigid conditions! It isn't too often than Canadian Pacific units find their way to Colorado. Looking dirty, beat up, old and worn down, it was still nice to see on this BNSF manifest at Tolland.

A BNSF manifest with an interesting consist sits in the siding at Tolland in the quickly falling snow. The crew will be here for a little over an hour while waiting on an eastbound still on the west side of the divide.

The snow has picked up a bit at Tolland where we find a westbound BNSF manifest (headed for Provo thanks to trackage rights) stopped short of the crossing in the siding and it is here the train will have to wait for another 70 minutes. The Moffat Tunnel is currently venting (after a westbound coal empty went through). And, after venting, an eastbound will get a turn at the tunnel.

At first glance, you may not realize that there is something in this picture you cannot see. Something would be able to see if this picture had been taken in July. Largely due to its (relative) short length and the fact that there is a road crossing near the east end, the siding of East Portal is use very infrequently. Completely covered by snow the rails of the siding lie next to this coal empty.

It has only been about 20 minutes since the Zephyr passed this location, but the rapidly falling snow has still built up enough for the plow on this C44/60AC to have something to do. The coal empty is just moments away from entering the 6.2 mile long Moffat Tunnel.

Lately, more and more SD70ACes have been appearing on coal trains on the Moffat. It is a welcome sight (and sound) to this EMD fan as coal trains have been all but dominated by GE, particularly since UP put all their SD9043MACs in storage due to frame issues. Here, an SD70ACe is third out on the head end of this westbound empty, charging west on rails hidden by falling snow at East Portal.

Regardless of what railroad owns the tracks or what trains are running on the rails, I think this is a timeless shot representing railroading in the Colorado Rockies in the dead of winter. A westbound coal empty approaches the grade crossing at Tolland. In the distance, the driver of the pickup apparently thought he could go in deeper snow that he actually could. A few friends work to help pull him out of the drift.

It is a balmy 21ºF and a bit windy in downtown Tolland as this coal empty, bound for the North Fork branch, approaches the grade crossing. The empty had been waiting on the main here for awhile to allow the Zephyr to run around it on the siding. With the Moffat Tunnel nearly done venting, the train will be pulling west shortly.

The last weekend in September and/or the first weekend in October is usually the best weekend to experience fall colors in the Colorado High Country. October 2nd was no exception! An eastbound coal load departs East Portal with a scattered blanket of changing aspens covering the mountain behind.

The mid-train swing helpers on this coal train are crossing over South Boulder Creek. The second unit is of particular interest...and ES44AC! It is a little uncommon to see newer AC power (i.e. ES44ACs and SD70ACes) on coal trains. UP's AC4400CWs and C44AC-CTEs are definitely the dominate work horses on Colorado coal trains these days. One additional thing to not about this picture is the third unit, UP 6316. Although you really can't tell from this shot, Espee scarlet and gray probably lies under that armor yellow for that units used to be SP 271!
